advice on torque converter

Greetings!

Camaro 67 RS, 350 stock engine (no perf. mods), 600cfm Edelbrock, 3.08 gears 10 bolt, PG is being replaced by a TH350. I have rebuild and shift kits. Haynes book recommends one in the 2000 range. I talked to a Jegs sales guy he suggested in the 1900s range.

Which torque converter should I get (1900-2100 or 2400)? The car is a street rider.

Thanks for your help!

darom,
all stall speed ratings are loose estimates at best. the same converter will have different stall speeds behind different engines. if your engine is stock, you are going to notice very little, if any, improvement with a 1900-2400 converter. or any converter for that matter. a converter with a higher than stock stall speed is just like any other performance part: not a big improvement without other performance parts. don't worry about a stall until you are ready to work over that 350 with at least the basic mods- cam, intake, headers etc. and generally speaking, the more horsepower your engine produces the higher any converter used stall will be. but remember, a high stall converter is not something you want to have on the street; they "pull through the lights" (rear tires continue to turn even at idle and brakes applied), keep engine revved higher than desired while cruising and lurch from a dead stop even with the softest accelaration. now would be a good time to work over that engine since you are replacing the powerglide (gasp!!) with a th350 (I'm sure you have your reasons... though I can't imagen what they would be...) good luck.

A good running stock SBC will idle fine between 600-700. Most stock converters stall somewhere around a grand. Stock motors are set up for fairly good low end grunt.. If a hole shot is what your looking for, Id go to 3.73's or 4.11's before I'd crank up the stall.

Thanks for your replies, guys. The problem is that I can't reuse the PG converter with TH350, and anyway, that is one old piece of equipment (I have original tranny).

So, since the tranny is going to be dropped, I have to come up with something to replace the old converter.

street car = low revs high torque = most fun

what ever your planning on doing to the engine keep the revs below 6 grand and go for mid range torque, listen to the guy at Jegs, he knows what he's talking about, go for the 1900-2100 converter and buy a new camshaft soon, something like a CompCams XE-268H

I've got 3.08s and a TH-350 in my Camaro and I find it a good compromise between highway cruising and low end acceleration

that's my 2 cents

Alright! When the tranny is out of the way, I will check what type of flexplate I have, to order the correct torque convereter. Jegs guy thought that I had a small bolt pattern there.

Again, thanks for all your responses.

I will settle for 1900-2100 version for now :)
