38 ford 4 door Thank you KULTULZ, that is what I needed to know. Now I can use my slide hammer with confidence. You guys are great and so is the Bulletin Board.

KULTULZ The axles are not held in with C-Clips on a 9" or 8". They are held in by bearing retainer plates at the axle housing ends and you will see the cap screws through the access hole in the axle flange.

I think this is what you are asking. The pinion flange is held on by the retaining nut. Use a steering wheel or harmonic balancer remover to slide it off the pinion gear.

9 inch Ford disassemble procedure

Before I start banging on my axle flange, is there anything I should know about any retainer rings inside? I am getting it ready to powder coat it and I dont want to ruin it taking it apart. It is a 28 spline 9 inch rearend with a standard carrier housing. Thank you for any information as I could not find anything covering this subject in the knowledge base.
