Check out Kennedy Engineered Products. I plan on using a 944 transaxle and torque tube hooked to a Buick 215 (300ci) which should develope about 400ftlbs or better. Their website is (www.kennedyeng.com).

4 Jaw Chuck How much HP is your son planning on making with his rotary? If over 300HP is the plan then a 13B with some serious bridge porting or even a peripheral port engine is required, for durability I would go for the peripheral port engine and fuel inject it. As for transaxles I would look toward Xtrac for some heavy duty manual transaxles. These are the same transaxles used in the British and German Touring car championships racing series and can handle some real abuse (Best d@mn racing on the planet BTW!).

It is going to cost like the dickens though.

woodz428 I would look in Hemmings, they also have an online mag now, and look in the High Performance and Racing section, there are consistently adds for older type Can-Am and Indy style car,Pantera and various other transaxles for around $3500-5500, and less. Also, the horsepower isn't as likely to kill the transaxle as TORQUE, and since rotaries aren't real torque monsters , you might not need as big a transaxle as you think.

Massive Transaxle...

My Son is building up a '68 Porsche (wait, it really is a Hotrod!), and will be installing his 450HP Rotary Racing Engine in it. (No Pistons but somewhat limitless RPM/HP with enough Fuel and Air).

The stock Porsche 901 Transaxle, similar to a big VW Trans but beefier, is good up to about 250 HP. The Rotary Engine will hang off the Trans back, just as a stock Porsche/VW. He needs to replace this Transaxle with something a lot stronger. He mostly drag races. He's looking at a $8K custom Porsche trans but, as the Dad, I'd like him to consider other options, if there are any.

Corvairs, VW Bus, etc can't pull the HP. I haven't found any Front Wheel Drive, 4/5 Speed Transaxles that are strong enough. Any ideas on this. Has to keep the Engine in the rear so a Ford 9" is not in the cards. It can't be a Torando since he wants Manual Gears.
