I'm thinking about buying a buffer/polisher/sander to use on my cars. I am wanting something that I can to polish/wax my Malibu and turn around and use to sand on the Packard. I am looking at this Makita 7" Sander-Polisher. What are your thoughts on this setup?

I had the same thought about a two years or so ago, asked on the MetalMeet boards and the general consensus was to not do it, so, I used their suggestion and bought a Harbor Freight 7" with a two year Warranty. I have a Makita also, and I'll tell you that the HF has not given me a minutes problem (neither has the Makita) and it is a LOT lighter than the Makita-

No, it is item#35632-5VGA (I can't right click and bring it over)-my intentions were more for grinding first then polishing later-

Thats a bit bigger than what I am looking for. I want something that can pull double duty on the Packard, with sanding the frame and body, and then can be used to polish and shine my daily driver. I know what i'm looking for won't be ideal for a lot of the heavy duty grinding and sanding that will be required on the Packard, but it will work good for removing a lot of the paint on the frame and body before I have to get into the bigger tools.

I have been looking at that same sander for my project. There are quite a few pros that are using it. Has anyone found a really good price on it? They are $185-200. If you found a good price, where?

Right now...the summit price is as goos as any of the other online places I have seen it.

I intend to get an 8" hook and loop pad for it. Either 3M or Ferro are looking good right now.

The HF 7" grinder is a little more than I need. The HF sander is fairly light duty ($29). Just my opinion. ;) I do have a 4 1/2" angle grinder for those small grinding jobs though.

ATD makes a sander thats in between the HF and makita as far as price and quality. They run around $75 or so.

Do not buy one that just does circular, you want an orbital or dual action sander/polisher. the hot one at the moment is made by Porter Cable and will run you about $80 to $100 and there are tons of aftermarket polishing attachments for it. The Porter Cable is variable speed. All the Vette freaks are using it to shine up their Vettes. The part number is 7424 and you can pick one up a Lowes or like store. Stay far away from HF if you are going to use it to polish, theirs are not dual action orbital.

I know for polishing people want the orbital. If you are stripping a car, everyone seems to use the makita. There are several places recommending the ATD one too. I just found a lot cheaper place to order it that what I knew about previously. Its $40.54.

I think its what I will order as soon as I get paid again. I will use a ferro 8" hook and loop pad # F6258 ($19.07) and indasa 80 grit disks # Ind820-80 ($40.73-for box of 50) from Baker PBE

Thats the plan (for now) anyway.
