considering the rectangle port heads I would go with a 454, Im currently in the middle of just such a project, the car is a 65 chevelle, 10:1 454, with the large oval port heads. I pocket ported the heads, and have installed 2.25x1.88 valves and shaved the heads to attain 10:1. the cam is a ISKY mega HDY 280, the intake is a weiand action+ (due to hood clearance) whitch I gasket matched and did some minor cleanup on. The whole idea was a stump pulling monster that he could drive to car shows etc.. the car has a 12 bolt, 4.10 gears, and 275/60/15 rear tires. Th350 and a TCI breakaway torque converter. this combo should pull like a freight train to 5800.

thoughts on this 427 combo
I'd appreciate anyones thoughts on this engine combo. Only the block has been purchased, so its not too late for me to change anything. Here's what I'm planning:
I have a big block chevy block, bored .30. I'm thinking a steel crank and rods, forged pistons. I can get this combo in about any compression ratio; I'm thinking about 10:1. A Comp Cams .294 duration with .595 lift, solid lifters, edelbrock aluminum rectangle port heads, edelbrock dual four intake with two 600 carbs. Headers of course. All this will go into a corvette that weighed 2100lbs with a small block in it and a near empty tank. The tranny is a muncie m21 and the rear is a 4:11, although this is much too low for my taste and will be changed, probably to a 3:08. The car does not have power brakes, but the headlight doors and wiper doors are vacuum. It would be okay if I had to rev the engine a little to get the vacuum doors to open, just so long as they will open. This is a street car, but it's not going to be driven by grandma.
And also as a final thought, I have a 454 forged crank, new in the box that I was considering using instead of buying a 427 crank. Any thoughts on this with the same combo?
