You slide in a 2WD shaft, reinstall the snap ring and remainder of parts.
you are then done.
You will need to purchase a 2WD tail housing too.
This require the proper gaskets and O rings to seal up the tranny too.
Cheaper $$ would depend on many things here.

|mayday3045||i have one ut of a 83 suburban of my dads. never did alot of four wheeling in it. just wondering if it could be done or if its cheaper to buy a used 2wd 700.|

|ViperMonster800||I'd like to say that it would be better just to get a 700-R4 4x4 tranny out of a wrecked Blazer or something and put it in your 2WD application car because the 700s are great transmissions but the standards are notorious for giving out when they become under load (a lot of towing) after a great amount of use. I don't know if your 4x4-ing will be excessive or not but I'd like to say it puts the same strain on it as it would towing. Then I'd get the correct crossmember (if the old one doesn't work) and then find the correct dimensions for your "new" drive axle.|

the trans must be disassembled about 1/2 way to change the output shaft to a 2wd shaft for a 2wd application.

i know this is a stupid question, but is it possible to take a transfer case off a 700-r tranie to make it work in a 2wd vehicle, and what would need to be done if it is.
