pcoghlan Thanks but the mounts are welded to the chassis. I dont really want to start cutting and welding just to replace the shocks.

techinspector1 The alternative is to change the mounts to accomodate a commonly available shock.

pcoghlan thanks!

I will do some research to see where I can get shocks that short. Everything on summitracing.com seems longer.

techinspector1 Based on info from manufacturers, I've always installed mine at 55% compression, 45% extension.
For instance, if your shock has a travel of 5" like the ones you have there, 55% of 5" would be 2.750", so....
The ideal length of shock for your application would be 12.500" extended and 7.500" compressed with your mounting dimension of 10.250". That would give you 55/45.
(10.250 plus 2.250 equals 12.500 or 45% extension from rest)
(10.250 minus 2.750 equals 7.500 or 55% compression from rest)

shock mounts out of alignment and shock length?

I am putting my '29 back together and noticed two things:

First, the shock mounting bolts on the passenger side are way off (first photo) of being in line. I can slacken the bolt underneath and rotate it but would this have caused any handling/ride issues? The driver's side looks fine (second photo)

Also, the shocks that came off have a length from 9 1/2" to 14 1/2". The distance between the shock mounting bolts is 10 1/4" at rest. I suspect my shocks are a little too long? What is the ideal length based upon the 10 1/4" mount to mount distance?

Thanks,

the problem side

this side looks fine.
