Cruzing pressure on my 357 small block with 15-40 oil sits at 58psi, (by no means excessive) about 10 psi less at idle, I lug it in my 4x pretty hard at times. cheap insurance imo.

Standard or Hi volume BBC oil pump question
I wonder how many people here know that the Big block chev high volume oil pump itís much bigger than the standard volume, that a standard volume small block pump and a standard volume big block pump are pretty much equal.
That the Big block hi. vol. falls between the standard and hi. vol. small block pump?
To suggest it's a horse power thief in ether standard or hi volume form would be pure speculation from most.
When someone asks "do i need hi. vol.?" the answer should be "how hot is the oil gona get?" hot oil gets thin, it well move through a system more rapidly when hot, pressure will drop and volume requirement will go up, if volume reserve isnít there pressure will continue to drop with temperature increase.
Metal to metal is gettin to be a big risk.
For those who say "don't bother with hi volume" i say "thatís fine if you never push the limit!!!"

|JamesRS||Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to use a standard pump with a high pressure spring like suggested. I will also be using the rotella T oil. (that's what I used to break in my cams too)|

Use Rotella T oil unless you want to move up to Racing Oil or synthetic.
Flat cams are getting boarder line on the new oils lack of zinc, etc.

|LilSmoke||I cant think of any reason to use a hv pump unless you need extra oil to help keep the bearings cool in a steady rpm situation. We use em on irrigation engines that see 1800 for 24 hrs,but they have large capacity pans. The ole ZL-1 and L-88 engines had em but they also had bigger pans. Normally a std volume pump with a pressure spring will work fine especially with std capacity pan.|

BBC oil pump question
My LS-6 BB crate mothr has a Mellings M77HV oil pump in it,and this seems to work very good.

BBC oil pump question
I've been doing searches about whether or not to put a high volume oil pump back into my engine during the rebuild. As some of you already know I had a cam go south on me and have to rebuild my 454. I had the block cleaned and bumped to 60 over since it was in the shop. (the overbore also cleaned up some cylinder wall scoring) But my question is whether or not I should use another high volume oil pump, or just go with a standard volume pump. The engine config is as follows:
454 (060 overbore - 466)
Lunati - Voodoo 60204 cam
Speed pro h581cp .340" dome pistons
781 oval port heads with comp cams 920 springs and fuller roller rockers
Nodular iron crank with stock stroke
Legend I beam rods with Arp bolts
Stock oil pan
I figure I'll take the engine up to 6000 rpm when at the track, but other then that it'll spend it's time in the 2000 - 5000 rpm range. I've read conflicting posts about whether you should use a high volume oil pump or not, so I thought I'd ask. Should I use another high volume pump, or get a standard volume pump for this combination?
