kenseth17 Just looked closer at the thread, and seen it is equivalent to rustoleum over here. An oil based paint. You would have to be nuts to put a real paint job over that later on, without stripping off the rustoleum. He never told the brand of the

he used. Is this the iwata of paint rollers, lol. I used an oil based paint called x-o rust a long long time ago to paint an old rusty trailer my parents would make us rake the yard and haul leaves in. Made a good practice paint in my craftsman spray gun.
Can't say that any of my friends or I took a real cheap way out when we were young and strapped for cash. I remember helping my brother and his friend sand and tape up his shovevette. Then it was sprayed with enamel spray cans. Can't even remember how many it took, but It probably would have been about as cheap to find a gun and compressor and buy some centari or something.

BarryK WOW!

I bet all you people that bought the so-called cheap paint guns feel stupid.

For you that spent the big buck on the Sata or Iwata, how stupid do you feel?

Shoot I probably have 20 paint rollers in the basement, so I'm good to go for a few Years.

$20 paint job

years ago , back in the early 60,s, i had a 35 ford coupe that i was working on. i painted the firewall bright red before i installed a flathead with 3 2 barrel carbs. a friend of my older brother wanted me to repair the rust and paint his 1951 ford panel. i didn't want to do it because he wanted a quality paint job for an earl shibe price. my older brother told him that he could fix the rust and paint the panel truck for $20 . my brothe bought 2 quarts of cheap black paint, and he filled the rocker panels with window putty that he got from a 5 gal can he found on the dump. he painted the panel truck with a very cheap speedy spray gun. he left the door up on the garage. when he got done painting, due to the wind blowing on the cottenwood trees, the panel truck looked like it was tared and feathered. A $20 PAINT JOB. that is a true story. enjoy!!

kenseth17 I actually seen another thread on that board talking about trem clad and cheap paint jobs and it was pages and pages long just like the john deer blitz black thread is on here. Basically shows alot of people look for a cheap way out when it comes to paint. Somewhat understandable with the prices of the good stuff today and I can maybe see it if it were a beater not worth sticking money into. Alls I can say is you get what you pay for. For a little more money you can shoot on a single stage with a hardener and have something you know will last awhile and is made for painting cars, even though it doesn't have the uv protection that a clearcoat on top will add. But if its something you care about and plan to keep awhile, and the paint job is the first thing you usually notice when you look at a car, why would you want to skimp on it or take any short cut on bodywork and prep? Also I don't trust the part about him saying you can just paint over the tremclad later on if you get it painted professionally. Ask a few of the professionals that make thier living fixing up old cars. If they care about thier reputation, I bet most normally take off all the old uncatalyzed enamels and lacquer based paint that were used years ago and won't risk painting or just sealing over it.

AndrewM Yeah, be sure to look at the pics on the LAST page of that thread (page 43 or so). Kid basically ruined his panels. Lots of sanding to do for him.

I suppose it works for some. But obviously for others, it doesn't.

gtcway Just remember that a $50 paint job is, well, a $50 paint job. Sure it might look good to some people, maybe even passable to someone as picky as I am, but I wouldn't use Rustoleum or similar paint on a vehicle unless I was about to destroy it or sell it to someone I didn't like It isn't going to last long and if you or someone else wants to put a real automotive paint on the car, the Rustoleum will have to be removed.
