1971 Malibu gear swap questions

Hey, I have a 71 Chevelle malibu with the factory 10 bolt rearend with the factory gear set. The posi Unit was rebuilt. I want to go lower on the gears, but not so low that It's not driveable due to horrible gas millage. I'm using it as a street car, no track, but I want to get more power. What gear set would you recomend? and how difficult are the ring and pinion gears to install? do they need to have the back lash set in them? Are all the GM 10 Bolt rearends the same 8.5" ? any info would be greatly appreciated
