I have broken 2 gear pullers trying to get the pitman arm off a 78 saginaw p/s box that I want to use on my 54 Powerwagon.
I think I may need to heat it up with a torch, but I worry about weakening it. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanx,
Gumball
Have you taken two 3# hammers and used them to simultaneously pound the boss on the pittman arm from opposite sides with the puller in tension? This has always popped off stubborn suspension joints for me. Heating these parts to just below red hot is no problem if you let them cool slowly in air. DON'T quench them in water and don't let the shaft change any color - keep the heat as far away from the shaft as possible.
Good points, Willys36. I've been doing jobs like that for so long that I tend to over-simplify things.
