sha_ba_do_bang the petroluem jelly was prolly used as assembly gel, to hold misc parts and springs in place(very helpful) we use transgel which is basically vaseline with blue dye,

also if its only been 300 and the trans was covered in the stuff you didn't take it to a very good builder, there should be no reason to have it all over the outside as very little is needed, and this just shows poor workmanship and no a very clean builder

good luck

mattgabe..... please do not hi-jack threads with a new different question of your own.

I split your posts off to start a new thread so there may be more answers to your question.

Many things could cause the tranny to act as yours does.

Since it was just rebuilt , I imagine there is a warranty of some type? Or is this a DIY rebuild at home?

Jmark I guess that means the you don't have third or fourth, which most likely means the 3/4 clutch pack fried, very common on the 700. Ck the fluid for a burnt smell, if so, its going to be rebuild time again, hopefully it can be done better than before.
