wondering if you could explain the differences between 3spd and 3spd overdrive trans(saginaw) ive got a 3spd in my modified and it really gets up and goes. would like to put an overdrive in, problem is, the rear mounts don't seem to be the same. on the 3spd I was able to use the stock tranny mounts on the tailshaft but on the overdrive i was looking at today there were'nt any. Im assuming it was one out of a truck. is the overdrive different from truck to car??
my concern is that I would have to mount off of the belhousing and I don't have enough room, also my engine is mounted with a hurst mount and it seems like there would be too muck stress on the trans and tailshaft.
whats the gearing like with a four speed and would it fit my stock trans mount???
Are you trying to get better gas mileage or better acceleration? Overdrive helps gas mileage but it won't do anything for acceleration. On the other hand, a typical (Saginaw, Muncie, BW) car-type four-speed trans will add a gear in that big gap between your current 2nd and 3rd gears, and most of the above will bolt in where your 3-speed is with little modification.
trying to get it so it isn't topped out on the freeway, igot open headers and it sounds like im gonna blow. iwanted the overdrive cuz i figured it would give me the same launch but improve my top end. can a four bolt in the same?? >>>>>NEIL>
remove the tranny this would be good to put in a new clutch and resurface the flywheel and pilot bearing then if you unbolt the 4 bolts to the bellhousing and swap the 4 spd in and reassmble and adjust clutch you need floor shifter for 4 spd of course
i changed mine in 2 hrs but i had already had the brand new clutch in 11in.
just realiozed if i put in a 4 spd the top end would be the same: 1/1, im better off putting in the overdrive. guess i needed to bounce the ideas off of a forum. .....NEIL>
find a five speed o/d tranny should do what you need. or you could put in taller rear gears with a 4speed and get the results you want.
