Do I need to be concerned with the clearance between my exhaust pipes and my under the floor mounted, vac assisted, dual master cyl? Is there a "rule of thumb" for distances from brake lines?
Yes, you do need to be concerned. Heat from the exhaust pipe can boil the brake fluid in the master cylinder (or brake lines)if too close. I had a similar problem on my '28 Ford Closed Cab Pickup. I also have the additional concern about being too close to the saddle tanks (Poly Gas tanks). I ended up using 2 1/4 diameter pipe which gives me about 2" clearance from the saddle tank and about the same from the master cylinder. I haven't had any problems with this amount of clearance. A heat shield or heat wrap would be another way to elliminate any concerns.
Thanks Frisco, I was wondering if I should sacrifice my 2.5" pipes, and go with 2.25", or even 2", to gain more clearance. I don't have a problem with my lines as much as I do with Booster/mastercyl. My pipes will pass beneath the booster/mc, and this will create my scrub-line, so I want the exhaust tucked in as close as possible, but of course my priority is safe and functional brakes. I appreciate you taking the time to tell me of your experiences with this problem.......Blooper
If you are concerned, I would look into some heat sheild material. You could use spark plug wire heat shields. They would be about the right size and would reflect the heat as long as it is not touching.
