That part is for comfort. When you are in the car and the door is closed you can pull some slack on the seat belt without it trying to retract. So you don't have the seat belt constantly pulling on you. When you open the door it retracts all the way.
It's a part of the seat belt retraction system but not the retractor itself. When the lever is depressed (as it would be with the door closed) the seat belt will catch and won't retract, unless you pull it out and release it. Part of it's for comfort. but mostly it's so the belts will retract to the guides on the seat backs when the door is opened to aid in getting in and out of the back seat.
Thanks all!!!
That sums it up .
I only ask because I just re-painted the jambs and the door, and I don't feel like re-installing it cause i'm afraid it might scratch up the door .
Since you don't want to re-use them, are they both still good, and are you interested in parting with them?
