Welcome to the site Ole JIM. :welcome: Now that's keeping a rod a long time! That sounds like a great project you will have there. A Buick diesel in that rod will be a real head turner. As this is the introduction forum you will get much more exposure to your questions in the Transmission - Rearend forum. I don't know the answers to your questions but the members who check that forum may know the answers. Good luck with getting that old hot rod back on the road.

Don't worry about it. Just about everybody makes that same mistake when they join. Have you thought of using a different diesel that was originally a rear wheel drive?

You might try coming after this is a different way. What transaxle came with that engine? Did it come with any other engine? Then try to find out if any transmission matches up with those engines.
Homebrew --I really don*t know? & I have asked? & It Appears as though? NO one here Knows?--so I*LL make a Template of My Bell Housing & GO to the local Salvage Yard & match It to GM Auto Trannies until I find a MATCH! End of SUBJECT!--as I Assume?? a regular 4.3 would be my best Bet?--as thats where I*LL Start!--as I thought?? May bee?? some one this Site would Possibly Know??--but I Guess?? I did some quick searching on google and found this for you

http://cruisers.shoumatoffmedia.com/43GMdiesel.html
Chevy 4.3L V6 Diesel and the Toyota Land Cruiser

From the LCML:

"Chet Wagner" <chetwagner@msn.com> wrote:

>Form doing a bit of research, I have found the following vehicles with the
4.3 diesel V6 in a rear-wheel-drive package needed for a conversion:

Monty Carlo 1982-83
Malibu 1982-83
Buick Regal 1982-83
Oldsmobile 1980-85 rear wheel drive "Cutlass, Hurst/Olds"
These engines have the typical 350 bellhousing bolt pattern.

The front-wheel-drive engines will not work unless you use a transmission
that will bolt to a 2.8-3.4 60 degree v6 engine, at least that is what I
understand.

For those willing to try this, a turbo from a 2.2 turbo Dodge whatever at
about 3-5 psi boost will net up to about 25% more power without internal
engine modifications. Of course, easier said than done. Be good for
altitude compensation though.

Some of this information may not be quite right, so give me a break if I am
wrong. I am still looking around for more information, so stayed tunned.Furthermore with adapters from Advance Adapters and others there are a lot of options.
From the sounds of it the FWD version is the same pattern as the RWD 60deg V6 (such as the 2.8L in S10's and 3.4L in Camaro's to name a few). From what I understand the engine isn't exactly set up for normal side engine mounts. I'm sure you will figure out some way to mount it.

Edit: some more info.

The story about your wife was funny :D

Don't listen to the guys that want to talk you into building a car the you won't want. Hotrodding is all about taking what you have and modifying/improving it to what YOU want. I thought the dodge 2.2L turbo sounded like a good suggestion too

Ole Jim,

as a diesel 32 Ford P/U is not my style, (I would do a flat head & two 1 barrel carb setup, or a 428 super cobra jet.) but thats me, I do agree a 32 Ford diesel P/U would be neat for a ole OTR Trucker, (probably just plain ole Neat !) I'm in the car transport business, I own one 99 international eagle single axle semi tractor 335HP Caterpillar and a 10speed, pulling a 4 car wally mo trailer. enjoy your project and stay around. my neighbor has a 30 ford model a or t coupe thats original, butt needs restored or hot rodded, I think anyway. I would make it look like this.

(I don't know whos car this is, but I like it)

thumbs up my fellow diesel rodder!

i am actually on my way of starting one of these projects myself too! i currently drive and love a chipped and oversized injector golf tdi with 135hp and 290bl-ft of torque and i sure as hell get my fair share of "bad looks" from the local honda's especially after i beat them all the way up to 130mph!!! my little dreamer is a 1930 model a rat with (i have just accepted) custom frame and a 6bt banks chipped to 700 bl-ft. as i am all about performance first, consequance later, i love diesel and in a sense, find it kinda sad they didn't pick up from the start. just want to say good luck with this project of yours and if u ever want to sell it after a million or two miles, just e-mail me, lol. btw, being in the big rig business in all, do u know anyone who could point me in the performance potential of a 4bt?
