Posting for a Chrysler owner (ptowntsi): I'm looking for a new torque converter. what are you favorite kinds for chrysler engines in vehicles that weigh about 4000lbs with 400hp and a 360ci engine. I know alot of guys like the precision industries "viper" converter, but those are $800.
If the PI Viper is anything like their Vigilante I'll give it my endorsement, $800 or not. You get what you pay for in a converter. I've had the Vigilante for several years and it is awesome, far better than the cheap one I used before.
I don't have a Chrysler but I have a 4200lb 03 Marauder and I run the Precision Industries equivalent call the Stallion. It's rated at 3500 stall with a lockup and it ran around $690. Worth every penny!
I've got it behind a 476(rwhp) 4.6 motor and that really gets the big car moving fast.
Ok, enough about pushing PI.. Any converter with sufficient stall and the correct gearing in the diff will do the same thing. I also happen to have 4.30's in the back end too and that too helped. But at the strip my car dropped a full .5 seconds off the clock and that was just changing from the stock converter to the 3500 stall unit. I would have to say that gears and a converter have to be the most bang-for-the-buck for big cars.
