1982 SS One more thought in case you are feeling particularly rich, any of the Strange housings can be had as a bolt in. Also Fab 9 makes some killer 9" housings that can take an amazing amount of power. Have fun, if you find two diesel G-bodies with 8.5"'s let me know, I can always use one.

78 elky this is exactly the kind of info I am looking for. I think I will see if I can find a diesel car first in the scrap yard if not I guess i'll have to decide on whether or what I want to do just trying to get as much info as possible before making any decisions thanks for all your help

1982 SS You will also have to narrow the diff to get it to sit like the one in there now. I'm not a fan of cutting and welding on my diff, too many little things to go wrong (warping, off by a little bit...), so I would rather pay my money and not have any down the road problems that can be associated with things like that.

78 elky It sits the way it did when I got it oh 8 years ago or so. Spent a few years over seas in the military and a few years other places in the military and had to leave the car at dads house till I got close enough to pick it up and start working on it. I also acquired and wife and a beatiful daughter along the journey so I like to stick to parts I can find in the scrap yard thanks for the info would I need to the offset control arms to run a 8.5 out of the b body like I would with a 12 bolt

1982 SS That's a little more power than me. But you can honestly leave the 7.5" and use good parts and not hurt a thing.

An 8.5" can be had from G-bodyparts.com. They do a lot of GN stuff and you can get a complete rear drum to drum for around $600.

Do you have the rear of the car higher than normal?

78 elky The back of the elky sits high enough a wheel would go right out the wheel well with out hitting. Right now putting together a 425hr 400lbs trq motor run full slicks I still drive the car to the track though kind of fun that way just change the tires once I get there. Who knows what the future has instore for the car soo would like to step up to a 8.5 my dad runs 600ftlb of trq on a 8.5 and has had no problems in 4 years so not worried there

1982 SS Any of the G-body could be had with a diesel. Olds might be the best bet to find one with a diesel. The B-bodies are the fullsize GM's, like the Impala, Caprice, big Caddy's... I think you will run into the housing to be too wide to get a wheel in the wheel well of a g-body. You would still run into the changing the spring perches and everything else.

Out of curiosity, what are you plans for the car? I'm puttin' 400 lb/ft through a stock axled 3.08 geared 7.5" with a locker, and still haven't broke anything on a set of sticky drag radials.

78 elky What would have a diesel? A regal or something? What are the B body cars? What kind of mods to rear required with these? the help is really appreciated Also width is not really a problem I don't have much clearence to the frame anyway so a axle that is four inches longer or so wouldn't be a problem

1982 SS If you can find a G-body that originally had a diesel engine, That would have the 8.5" and would be a direct bolt in (open diff 2.73 or lower geared). You can put a lot more to a stock 7.5" than people are willing to admit to. I have friends in the 12's on a 7.5". You use good parts and you can go a long way. I think that the B-body has a wider width drum to drum, and you can find a 9"out of an older fullsize ford. As soon as you go with a different diff, you run into width problems. Happy hunting!

78 elky rear end

This has probably been answered already but I searched and didn't come up with the info i needed. Looking for a 8.5 or a ford rear end swap for a 78 elky I am not going to find one from a hurst or 442 or any that in not on my budget Can get what ever rear I want for $100 out of local scrap yard. Have welding shop that will weld spring perches and control arm brackets to donor rear for $100-150 so thats route looking to go. My question what car will make the best donor with least amount of modifications would like to stay with 8.5 or ford because of availability
