I need to know how to convert a a 1986 monte carlo ss to manual steering. If someone could give me procedures and what vechiles to get the parts from. I am trying to reduce any drag on the engine except for the alternator.

Basically, all I figure that you would need to do is find a steering box from a manual car of that style and use that. Wouldn't have to be the same body, just same size. The linkages and mounts should be the same. I am not into Chevrolets, but that should cover it from what I know.

Are you going strictly drag racing, double duty street/strip, or road coarse? Unless your strictly drag racing, leave the steering alone, unless you can get a quicker ratio box for the power steering. The minute power loss the p.s. gives you is more than offset in drivability and the ability to correct the path of the car in an emergency or just having fun baking the tires. I wouild look at other ways of increasing power first. e.g. a good performance tuning shop with a dyno will increase your power more in a couple of hours, for probably less money than the swap. Look at boxed controll arms, urethane bushings, and a host of other stuff that will give you the quicker e.t. and better handling.
