|irocz8868||first of all if the car only pulls when you hit the brakes this could be caused by: brake adjustment, faulty wheel cylinder, or air in the lines. as far as the play in the steering, if you replaced the steering box don't try to adjust it.boxes are adjusted when they are built, so when you go back to try to adjust it you more than likely damage the worm gear. yes it does tighten up the steering shaft but it does nothing for the loosness in the frontend. what i would suggest is jacking up the frontend. lock the steering wheel in place. go to either front tire and try to move it back and forth. if the tire moves have you or someone to look under the car while you move the tire so you can tell where the movment is really coming from. there is more the one component in your frontend that will cause the play in your steering. the car pulling to one side when you hit the brakes could also be caused by a faulty frontend part. i rebuild frontends everyday at a gm dealership. it's wild what can cause your problem. hope this helps.|

I`ll give you the same advice for your wifes van. Keep it simple!!!!! That has allways been good advice for me. We tend to make things harder than they are. Hence, Check air psi, tighten gear box, then tear into ( trouble shoot)the brakes if you have to. To me that is common knowledge and part of the process of discovery. To me that`s not guessing that`s processing data. 2 penny`s worth from me!!! Remmember i`m certainaly not the brightest bulb in the lamp.I Just try to be consistant.

|adtkart||It seems like everyone here is just guessing. It is like someone calling a doctor and saying "I don't feel good. What's wrong with me?" Withoug some information on the vehicle, how can someone give any advise on what is wrong with it? Oh by the way, my wife's van died on her today. Can one of you guys tell me why?|

Do not adjust a steering box without consulting the appropriate shop manual for that vehicle or taht box!
Improper adjustment, failure to do periodic checks and adjustments, and lack of lubricant are the most predominant reasons why so many steering boxes are junk.
A steering box kept adjusted properly and properly lubricated will last virtually forever.

|firstname.lastname@example.org||What kind of car is it? If it has front buggy springs like my Willys, it will pull to the side no matter what you do. This is caused by the springs flattening out on braking causing the pitman arm to be pulled and the wheels to steer. I quickly learned to compensate and do it subconsciously now. No big deal.|

Keep it simple. Frist check your air psi in the tires!! Take and jack up the front of the car,(no weight on the wheels)grab your 5/8s wrench ,loosen the jamb nut on the sterring box. With your screw driver or allen wrench(as required) turn in the worm gear until it seats. Then turn it out 1/8th to 1/4 turn.Lock down the jamb nut. Then look at the brakes. Simple stuff frist. My two pennys worth. But let us all know what you find out. I would think if you just rebuilt the front end and had it aligned, they would have adjusted the sterring box. However, stuff happens!!!!

I will bet your problem is caused by the brakes. The first thing I would do is pull the hubs and look at the condition of the shoes, action of wheel cylinders, return springs, grease on drums,etc. If all that looks good the front brake shoes are probably out of adjustment. When you apply the brakes one set a brakes is grabing the hub at a slightly different time than the other. Try this method of adjustment on all 4 wheels, it has worked for me for years.
Jack the whole car up so you have all four wheels off the ground. Release the emergency brake. Wedge a 2 X 4 between the brake pedal and the seat so that you have a medium presure on the pedal. You may have to play with this until you get the feel of it. Now adjust the brakes on each wheel so that the drag on the wheel is the same on all 4 wheels. You will have to turn the wheel to determine the amount of drag you have, let off on the brake pedal, make your adjustment, then put your 2X4 back on the pedal and test your drag again. When you get all 4 wheel with the same drag, while the wheel turns freely without rubbing on your brake shoes, the brakes will be adjusted perfectly. I know that sounds a little undignified but this method has worked great for me for years.

well, u should tell us what kind of car you have for one thing, it would help a bit. anyway, if your car is pulling to one side and you've already got an alignment then i would guess that it could be a warped drum causing excessive drag on one side, or you may have a stuck wheel cylinder so there is uneven braking on one side.
as far as your steering, this must be an older car if you've got drums all around. do you have a steering box? most older cars have a bit of play anyway in the wheel and from the column to the box or rack. if it is a steering box you might be able to adjust the play a bit. there is a worm gear in the box with a gear on the column that fits inside. maybe you can adjust this to take up some slack.

Loose steering even though steering box is relatively new?
There is a little "play" when the steering wheel is centered.
Is this causing my car to pull to the left when I brake? (i got drums all around). Or is that a braking problem?
I just got new tires, an alignment, new control arm bushings.
I would like it a little stiffer.
do i need a box adjustment?
could it be my coupling?
