CHEV66JB Thanks all for your input- and yep, I was talking about the NUT one size DOWN from the one lying under the pitman arm!! 8^]

Got the nut off with a 1 5/16" socket (had to go up to 3/4" drive, never had those before!), then couldn't get the blasted pitman arm off. 40 yrs sure makes for its own form of epoxy!! Ran to the local Auto Zone, picked up a pitman arm puller, and voila!! My '66 now has a new front end!

Now, if I could just find a damn tool to shut the rain off for 2 days STRAIGHT so that I could get an alignment!!! (on the East Coast, I think it's rained non-stop since St. Patrick's Day.)

Thanks to all who contributed to this topic- this site rocks.

superrodder :p my guess is if you are laying under the car, looking up at the pitman arm then you would be the LARGE NUT UNDER THE PITMAN ARM :p
Just kidding
If you cant find a socket the right size at a hardware store then you'll have to go to an automotive store or tool truck.
pitman arm nuts can be torqued on pretty tight so use a large impact wrench or a long johnson bar to break it loose

johnnymopar easy way is to get a vernier and measure the nut. i always got stuck on the big ones, now i measure first and i know right away if i have the correct socket.

size of nut below pitman arm

Hey all,

I'm trying to remove the pitman arm on my '66 Chevelle, and the nut size is HUGE. I tried a 1 1/4" socket and it was too small, then tried a 1 1/2" socket, and it's too big.. Is this bolt metric? Or is it just 1 3/8"? I don't remember seeing that size at the store.

Thanks in advance,

CHEV66JB
