ohhh, its so tempting, since I've got a funny comment to it. I don't want to start another kirker war here, and I haven't used any of their stuff, so I will shut up. Thanks for pointing it out x. Could help out some guys if they can get it in california and are wanting to use a cheaper line of paint. I prefer gloss myself. When you spend many many hours getting a body ready, you want it to shine like a new penny.

Ken it looks interesting. The reason I posted was that I had seen a number of people on here looking for just such an item. I know most paint mfrs do offer
a flattening agent for paint so its possible to get the same results that way too.

But nice to see something like this pre mixed in a can :)

Agree on not wanting to start the kirker wars..

It might be a good solution to doing trim also. I typically use SEM and was looking for a low sheen durable alternative.

I shall order some to try during the week.. its worth a look at.

I know that the original post and the subsequent discussion has been re a "Satin Black", but I have the exact same question re a "Satin White"

I was/am planing on using all SPI products (BC/CC) on the '53 Corvette fiberglass replica that I am building. I want to go with a white BC, but not a "bright/pure/appliance" white. I also don't want "Beige/Sand/Cream/etc." :nono:

I was/am really thinking more of "Diamond White"/"Frost White"/etc. :)

What are you guys thoughts/opinions/recommendations re:
(1) One of the SPI White BC with flattener
(2) One of the SPI White BC with Pearl
(3) One of the SPI White BC with Pearl intercoat
(4) The new "Flatz" Urethane as the BC
BarryK - Is this stuff compatible with SPI primer/sealer and CC?
(5) Other suggestions?

Remember guys that I ain't a professional and am planing on doing only one car! :p

I know what you want and a pearl over the white will do it but i don't recall the pearl's name. I got some at home and will get back to ya.
I used it on the dragster white and it looks kinda flat till it get's in the sun but it won't put your eyes out either. Really nice.

Hot Hues has a nice semi flat with their Hot Rod black if your wanting a sprayable sort.

Sorry but I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to acheive.

If I am reading it right it looks like you are looking to acheive a "toned down" = not eye searing white color and not a DUll = Satin Overall Finish.

If you use the "Flatz" Urethane as the BC and then Clear it you will end up with a "SHINY" white finish. All Bases will dry with a low sheen. The clear is what brightens the color up.

Sounds to me like your best bet would be to find a paint code for the proper color white you have in mind and get some Base mixed to that color code vs. trying to alter the state of a factory packed SPI color to acheive the look your after.

The choice whether to use flattener or pearl will create two entirely different looks. Completely different ends of the spectrum IMO.

Thanx for the feedback guys!

bloverby - you are absolutely right! I had a "senior moment" :drunk: My question for BarryK was really meant to address primer/sealer - should not have added "CC". At least I know that someone is reading my post! ;)

While I've got you guys attention - personal opinions re overall (not just hood, stripe, dashboard, etc.) "FLAT/SATIN" paint job? I see that FLATZ has a lot of other colors, including metallics and pearls.

Well, Use what you like to get what your after.
The pearl is Hot Hues HHM 6000 White Pearl powder.
When it's shot over a white base coat,It will have a semi flat appearance and when the sun hits it,then it pops just enough to show a little pizazz.
It's cheap enough for the powder and use some SPI inter coat clear to mix it with. You can shoot some test panels to get the idea. This combo is so subtle you almost can't over do the pearl coat cause it's white on white and actually, the more pearl, the flatter/thicker looking it will get. Even after the top clear coat,it's still very laid back. I ended up mixing in some gold pearl on the dragster cause it was too dull. It needed some more sparkle but thats not what your after.
FWIW. Mike.

Mike,

Sounds like you guys are reading my mind!

In retrospect, I think that the idea of using the FLATZ was just an ill-timed "brain far-" :nono:

I think my next move will be to try some test panels with different amounts of pearl in the inter coat as you suggested. That was pretty much my original plan. Appreciate the info on the Pearl powder. I like the idea of trying a little gold pearl also. I think that it would bring out the tan leather interior. :)

When using FLATZ paint is this stuff going to hold up like
Paint or Primer ?
Simple one stage hot rod black or am I missing something .

I see they sell a Flat Clear I guess thats if you want to paint your Ride
A color they dont have and still want the Flat look ..

Just use there clear if using your own Base-coat
and it's not needed for there Paint ??

My cab is in the body shop getting a fresh coat of paint. I have made the decision to use a "SATAN" finish. Not black as most people have done but a champagine (sand) color pearl metallic. I have had a few test panels shot and i think it looks awsome....... May regret it someday!!

My bodyshop person thinks it looks bad!! :drunk: :drunk: :drunk:

Hope this attaches Im not good at computers. Anyhow this may be what you want or it might not be white enough. The white portion I mixed using X-otic paint. It is basecoat white with a drop of red and a drop of blue also I did somthing different, instead of mixing it with innercoat clear like i usually do I put 1/2 teaspoon of gold pearl powder pearl quart directly in the paint, it pretty much killed the pearl except in bright sun, which is what I was after, anyhoo for what its worth. Did a Rat Rod junker for a friend with this kirker Hot Rod Black paint. He sanded and masked it and I shot the $49.95 a gallon Hot Rod Black on it in 3 coats. It looks like flat black primer with no shine at all. Comes out of the can so thick I had to thin it to spray with my primer gun that has a 1.8 cap on it. I did the whole jeep in 2 hours, so the $300 I charged him made me some nice cash for an afternoon. Will never use it on a decent car as it was junk paint as far as I'm concerned. But the guy was happy as can be with the way it looked for his 1948 Jeepster Rat Rod. All I could say was different strokes for different folks
