Well, just wanted to post an update on the oil problem.
It's been almost a month now since my last new plug went in AND since I deleted the PCV valve.
The plug is much cleaner after almost 30 days compared to the one that I photographed at 10 days. My oil consumption has dropped considerably too. It's only down 1/2 quart this month, probably close to 1500 miles.
I still think I have a slight problem in #2 but it's not near as bad as before. Threads were actually almost dry this time too. I may have a bad stem seal and plan on pulling the VC and springs on #2 and ck it out when time permits.
My main culprit was the placement of the PCV valve as it sits in the baffle. I"m running the tall Proform covers and the PCV sits right on the inside baffle plate, apparently vacuuming the oil right off that plate as it comes by. I may try just putting an 0-ring on the PCV valve to space it up a tad, off the baffle plate and see it things hold. The PCV valve hose was above the pipe on the carb and I think that raw oil was running down the hose and dripping into the intake after I shut it off. It then ran right into #2 intake runner, then down the head and over the plug, giving me the constant oily threads and fouling.
Don't really like running with the engine gasses vented into the aircleaner, but I seem to be in much better shape now than before.
Sometimes it's the little things that get overlooked that cause the grief.

Where do you reckon the oil comes from ?
I´ve run my finger around the upper head and nothing is coming out of the rocker cover gaskets, funnily it´s clean oil.
In fact there is no oil whatsoever on any part of the head apart from the spark plug threads. more

My threads are ALWAYS oily, all the way to the seat. 2 days ago, I indexed the plug then pulled it out. The clean side is directly facing the exhaust valve and the dirty/oil side faces the intake valve. I think I may have a guide or seal problem too. As soon as I get some time, i'm going to pull the VC and ck the seals and stem movement.
Might not hurt to go pull the plug and see how its doing, been 7 or 8 days now on this plug.

Has that plug got oiled threads ?
The motor I have now and it´s predesessor oiled the plug threads real bad.
Having nearly choked myself running two valve cover filters sans PCV,
I went for a run today with replaced PCV, still miss firing, BUT NOT number 7,
seems like another has taken over the task
I´ve ordered valve stem seals, so next weekend it´s that and manifold resealing.

Ok, going to give this PCV thing one more shot. I ran that hose into the bottom of my aircleaner like the other side VC is run, just venting both into the aircleaner housing. IF the pcv is vacuuming the oil out of the baffle, this should solve that by just venting it into the aircleaner. Time will tell.
I removed the valve and found a rubber sleeve in my box that bushed up the 3/8" line so its a snug fit in the PCV gromment.
Then, after laying the 10 day old PCV valve on the table, I noticed it was soaked with oil.
I also put in a brand new plug in #2 so I can see any changes in a few days.
Just for reference sake, here is a picture of the 10 day old plug as it came out this morning. BTW...had to add another quart today!
I'll ck it again in a week or so.

Well, I have another idea. Some may remember this thread that I had 10 days ago with the first foulded plug.
While I did change out the intake and gaskets, I still did NOT figure out where all the oil was coming from that had covered the whole inside of the intake and heads. Was just talking to another engine friend and he knows the whole story and asked what ever came of the PCV problem of sucking so much oil that it covered the intake and heads. DUH! Totally spaced that out. So his suggestion was to delete the PCV valve and run a hose up into the air cleaner and see if the sucking oil problem stops.
I'm running tall Proform covers and the baffles "looked" good but who knows, the PCV could be sucking tons of oil at highway speed. Also, #2 intake runner is directly under where the PCV dumps from the carb port. IF the hose has oil in it after I shut it off, it could be draining into the intake and running right into #2 cyl since my truck leans hard to the right when parked in my driveway. (crooked driveway, not the truck!LOL)
So, i'm off to the shop to re-route a hose from the VC to the aircleaner and run it for 2 weeks and see how the plug looks. Going to install a brand new plug while i'm at it for good measure. Glad he called! Maybe this is it!

IMO that thing needs to come out.. I don't think a vavle guide/seal can trash a plug that bad in 2 weeks. You can leak it but i really don't think it's going to change the final result.
I might do one last thing.... change the plug wire to that cylinder with one from another and see if the problem follows the wire, or stays with that cylinder... I have had wires that will ohm ok but still not work under load...
All in all i think it needs help..

Yours are oily though.
The oil cools the plug and those deposit's begin to collect. Then the oil covers it all up.

This sounds like a ring problem to me.
I agree that Cranking compression doesn't tell you much.

Engine oil consumption
Guys, if it were me, I would do a few diagnostics first before tearing anything apart.
One quick check would be to do a cylinder leak-down test. Get the piston at TDC on compression stroke, fill the cylinder with air using fitting in the plug hole and listen for escaping air. If you hear air leaking into the pan, well that means a problem with the piston/ring. Leaking into intake/exhaust manifolds, probably valves.
Most people check compression only, which is ok, but that really doesnt pinpoint the problem area.
