Can you buy eaton set up the way you want them or do you have to do it yourself? with 450 HP and 450+ foot pounds of torque i will be using street tires, it is only a GM 10 bolt 8.2 rear end.

curtis73 If you're buying new, I would definitely go with an Eaton Posi.. in fact I just did for one of mine. Quiet, seamless operation, rebuildable, tuneable to act like anything from a really mild limited slip all the way up to almost spool. Most of them come with 400# springs for street, but there are also 800# springs for street strip, then there are different clutch friction materials, fine tuning with lube choices, rock solid proven strength. Hands down my choice is Eaton.

I've had good luck with Precision gear and Motive gear, but most of my builds are street performance; no huge shock loads from drag racing, just 350-hp street screamers. They're both a budget kinda gear, but they're quiet. I've also heard lots about Richmond gears being noisy, but the two I've driven had no whine at all. Maybe they're just more finnicky about being set up right. Regardless of noise, they are said to be some of the highest quality/strongest gears.

If you want new and you want really good stuff, consider your GM parts counter. GM gears are top notch stuff. You know (if set up right) they won't whine because in their stock applications you can't have a Buick whine when your customers are 75 years old and expect perfection under warranty

curtis73 Depending on when your factory GM posi came from, its either an auburn style or a clutch style. If its the later Auburn cone style, skip it. They are not rebuildable and most have enough miles on them that their lives are limited at best.

If you get the Auburn cone style, forget the $100 exchange thing. You are responsible for shipping both ways (including insurance), and depending on where you are, that could be $50 plus another $10. I just don't like the Auburn unit. If you're worried about price, trust me... the Eaton could cost twice as much and I'd still buy it.

Eaton style limited slips are a totally rebuildable, tuneable system that (in my opinion) are way beyond anything that Auburn ever built.

Deuce Richmond gears are made in my state ... and yes MOST are noisy IMHO ...
I run 9 inch Fords and will NOT use a Richmond gear. I prefer to find old NOS factory Ford gears ...

Same for your project ... I prefer a factory GM posi and factory GM gears ...
Harder to find ... but worth it IMHO

Who makes best posi unit and gears

I have a 66 chevelle w/ 400 SBC 450 horsepower and turbo 350 trans. I am putting in a NEW 3:73 gear with a posi unit. Which is better auburn or eaton posi?? Or other??
i am leaning towards the auburn, cheaper and can send back up to 4 years for $100.00 and they will rebuild it w/ all new parts!! What brand of gears do you guys reccemend?? Superior axle and gear? Motive gear? richmond gear? Richmond gears are they noisey??

Thanks
Doug
