I believe the instructor who taught our class worked at body shops back in the day and he taught us body filler on bare metal then epoxy , but I've found some info on here and other sites and I understand the benefits now of doin a epoxy first.. thanks again|

|baddbob||If you're looking for the best quality, yes. The basic approach-Get her all stripped down and sanded well with 80grit, then clean the metal really well with preferably a water based wax and grease remover and apply two coats of epoxy primer, allow the primer to lock up good overnight then apply your body filler the next day. No need to scuff up the epoxy if you get the filler on within the epoxy's recoat window(usually 7 days with most epoxies). Sand the filler and finish it off to a minimum grit of 180. Scuff or sand all the epoxy if past it's recoat window and apply more epoxy over any sand throughs or over the complete car. Now apply the primer surfacer and blocksand till straight, finish your sanding with 600 and move directly to paint or apply a sealer then paint. Do some research here with the search function-there's lots of information. Epoxy primer under filler isn't a practice regularly used in collision repair due to the added expense and more importantly time but it is the best proceedure.|

That's correct. The epoxy will seal the metal from the moisture in the air so it won't rust. "Bondo" is then applied over the epoxy. This keeps airborne moisture from filtering through the bondo (which is very porous) and getting to the bare metal which would result in rusting everything from the inside out. The "bondo" is then sealed with sanding primer after it's shaped.

|Centerline||The correct order is epoxy primer then filler then sanding primer then if needed sealer followed by finish coats.|

Hey guys, I stumbled across this site and thought this would be a good place to ask my question.. Me and a couple of buddies are currently building a 72 Olds Cutlass and we almost have the car completely stripped down to bare metal.. Now, I took a auto body collision course for 2 years but that was about 3 years ago and I have lost all my information I had .. So, Once we get the car in bare metal, whats next??? If my I remeber correct, body filler, epoxy, filler primer, then sealer?? Any info is appericated..
