Several of yuze guys have been asking about how my car is coming. Time has been in short supply lately, but I have been dedicating just about every waking free moment to it. The car has been completely disassembled for the last time. The body is off the frame and on a rolling fixture. I am hoping to paint either late September or early October when it cools off a bit. I have devoted a huge amount of time in getting the deck lid to fit correctly with even gaps. The body where the deck lid meets had also been consuming a huge amount of time. The glass work in the channels was very course and needed to be smoothed out first. I then layed on a good layer of Evercoat Rage and sanded most of it off to arrive at some nice looking deck lid channels.

The pics show the first application of Evercoat MX241 polyester primer around the deck lid opening and the front cowl area. The cowl area also required a large amount of work to smooth it up. There were portions that had very rough glass work with some divots and other defects that had to be corrected. The first coat of primer really shows up the things you don't really notice when you are roughing up the raw glass. It will reveal lots of pinholes that will be filled before the second coat goes on.

All the voids that existed around the front windshield opening have been repaired and it looks good.

I am next turning my attention to the door openings that also have some rough glass work to be corrected and filled. After the above items have been taken care of I will apply several heavy coats of MX241 to the entire body. It will then be block sanded again and a coat of PPG K36 2K primer/surfacer will be applied followed by another block sanding session. I have just about removed my fingerprints with all the sanding that has been going on :pain: . Following that a final coat of PPG K36 will be applied and wet sanded with 600 to hopefully arrive at a ready for paint body.

The fenders, running boards, gas tank cover have all been primed and block sanded once.

Barry, if I did not know anything about these guys and seen their work there is no way I would. And to tell you the truth, I am kinda burnt out on the paint thing, and ready to put this thing together.

One of our club members had his 34 Plymouth coupe at the shop these guys work at during the day. It was there for almost a year for body work and paint. It was painted Kandy Apple red and it is a jaw dropper. The paint job rivals anything I have seen at any show, including Louisville. One of the fellows is the young man that repaired my sons Vette after someone knocked a hole in the door. Their work is first class.

Final assembly has started

The paint, color sanding and buffing is finished. It is now time to start the final assembly. I feel as though I have finally conquered a major hurdle. The paint looks really well, actually a lot better than I expected. The money I paid these young men to color sand and buff everything was very well spent IMO and saved me a whole bunch of time. The body is back on the chassis for the last time and the garage floor is full of highly buffed fenders, running boards, deck lid, gas tank cover and hood parts. The wife's Tahoe is spending a few nights outside until I can clear a space for it (probably several weeks or more).

The fellow doing the buffing could not believe how hard the PPG 2002 was and kept commenting on it. Some of the parts had been cleared quite a while and required some really aggressive buffing compound. I was being far too cautious with the buffing and was not getting very good results. The body was re-cleared and it was color sanded and buffed within the 16 hour window and was far easier to buff.

Tomorrow I will post some pics of the body and all the pieces. This is now the fun stage for me . First on the agenda is insulating the body. I have some Cool Car ceramic insulation I am going to try. The guy who owns Cool Car as I understand it was one of the founders of Lizard Skin and had a falling out and formed his own company. I saw both of these products at Louisville and they appeared identical. At the time I did not know that they were actually the same product. Cool Car is a bit less expensive than Lizard Skin.

My Tea's seat still has not arrived, but has been promised within two weeks.

Vince thanks alot. This gives me something to work with.Trying to get a colour for my '46. This is one of the colours that I was looking at along with a '06 Pontiac colour. Just want it a little deeper maroon that doesn't wash out in the sunlight. I think between the two I'll be able to get what I need. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Your car is looking great too by the way. Keep it up! I may be seeing you soon at any south Texas car show soon.

By the way, I have a 05 Dodge Ram 2500 that is that color. Looks great in the bright sunshine.
Yeah we will have to meet up. What color is your Willys going to be?

It must be nice to be so close to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can't even find the light switch!

Car looks great!  Looking forward to seeing it all done and sitting in the sunlight. What are your plans for color in the interior?

The Tea's seat is coming already upholstered in dark gray leather. I am thinking I will do the rest of the interior in the same shade with some lighter gray inserts. The dash and all the window moldings are the color of the body.

Going together

Had a productive day today. I have read that to put one of these cars together you start from the rear and work forward. I was apprehensive when it came time to fit the deck lid because I had so much trouble with it. If you guys remember the deck lid was the worse fit of the car. The gaps were uneven, close at the top and wide at the bottom. One side had about a 3/8" gap while the other side varied from 1/4" to 3/8". Had to add to both sides then sand away until both gaps were even. The underside of the deck lid was a total disaster. I spent well over 80 hours just on the underside of the deck lid and the body smoothing and filling. Well it all has paid off, the fit was perfect and it could not possibly look any better....I am stoked

Just wanted to say awesome job vince. I don't think I've posted in this thread yet, but have peaked in from time to time. After the money and all the time you have spent correcting that body, I am glad to see you at the point you are. Not many are cut out to stick with such an involved project and continue to do great work.I think I've bought ppg paint in that $$$$$$ code before. I remember a certain indigo blue. If it was red I would kinda expected it, but blue.
