dustinlmiller13 I agree with Top Fuel. Even if you have a gear lower than 2.73 (2.56, etc.), you could still buy a ring gear spacer from summit racing to accompany larger ones (3.73, 4.10, etc.)

topfuel As long as the gear you are replacing is a 2.73 or higher, you do not have to change the carrier. Only is you have a 2.56 or 2.41 do you have to change the carrier. This is according to Richmond Gear.

gm 8.5" 10 bolt question

k guys, i got some answers to my last thread but they more or less confused i'll be more specific...i took the rear end apart in my 79 trans am 8.5" posi, i counted the gears, it is a i bought a rear end from the junk yard from a 79 camaro, 8.5" posi, it is a 3.08:1.... now here is where im confused, is the 2.73:1 a 2 series carrier or a 3 series carrier? and did i buy the junkyard rear end for nothing?? and will 3 series ring and pinion gears, ie. 3.42, 3.73, fit on a 2.73:1 series carrier?

thanks alot for the help..
