Helping a friend out. I know nothing about Fords, especially diesels.

Anyway, he has an oil leak visible at the bottom of the balancer. Unlike SBCs, there isn't a timing chain cover behind the balancer but I'm assuming there is an oil seal on the crank behind the balancer.

I'd like someone to confirm this and provide suggestions on the best way to replace the seal.

Is it a pry out and replace process? Or, something more complicated?

ford diesel timing seal leak

it sounds like the timing cover seal has hardened up and/or the surface of the balancer the seal runs on has a groove worn in it by the seal, anyhow pull the balancer off, look for the groove, which is repaired with a speedy-sleeve kit,and hopefully you can replace the seal without removing the cover-plate. be sure to look to see how far up the engine the oil is coming from. It may be you just noticed it on the balancer,is it engine oil,or is it another fluid. It could be leaking from the intake to block parting surface. You may need brake clean to wash the old oil off first, then watch for the leak to re-appear

Get in the Zone :) Autozone has instructions for a 6.9 / 7.3 Navistar (International Harvester) diesel in 1987 to 1996.

Scroll down the page.

Be careful with the w/p bolts on this application ...
WARNING

The two top water pump bolts must be no more than 11/4 in. (31.75mm) long bolts any longer will interfere with (hit) the engine drive gears.
I believe they are talking about the injection pump drive gears here.

That is correct and if you put the wrong bolt in there and hit the timing gear it will cause the head to seize in the injector pump. Ruining the EXPENSIVE pump. About a $800 mistake
