Cutting Glass on a 56 Buick

On my 57 Buick the windshield and 3 piece rear window were
both sunk. This was done by cutting a slot in the metal edge
at the bottom of the glass so that it can slide through. Make
new brackets to hold in place. The only glass that had to be
cut was the rear quarter window and vent window glass. The
door glass remains stock and has a stopper added to prevent
the glass from being rolled too far.

How did you sink the windshield with the wiper drivers there in the way? I want to do this to another 60 T-bird that I am building. Do you have any pics of doing the windshield? I think I have an idea of what I want to do but I'm not sure of how to set and secure the seal which is what holds the windshield in place. Did you sink the entire windshield frame down or just cut it down and sink the windshield? Thanks.

I just finshing a chop on a 57 BUICK,All my glass was sunk ,looks
like it was factory job.

Mark, tempered glass can not be cut, period. 99% of all curved glass is tempered, windshields being part of that 1% that is ALWAYS "Safety plate" (the two layers of glass with plastic in the middle). I am not certain of the actual process of manufacturing tempered glass. But as the name implys after the glass is formed into shape it is "tempered" with heat to have a "layer" of super hard glass on the outside. When that super hard layer is penatrated, the ENTIRE sheet "fails" and the ENTIRE sheet falls apart into tiny 1/4" sized pieces.
It is strange stuff, you can throw a brick at one of these windows and it MAY bounce right off! OR, you can take a tiny piece of ceramic from a spark plug and throw it at it and it will break into a million 1/4" pieces! That is a little trick if you ever have one to break, a tiny piece of spark plug ceramic WILL break it almost every time!
The 56 Buick (as in all GM cars) had a safety plate windshield and side glass with a tempered back glass. The side glass is all perfectly flat by the way. There is no car made today that has this, all glass but the windshield is tempered on 99% of cars today. There are a few exceptions in high end cars and cars with side air bags (a very few) that have curved safety plate on the sides.

It can be ground with a wet belt. I know a glass guy who converts 65 Mustang Coupe door glass to Convertible glass by grinding the rear corner down a little. But it literally takes DAYS to do it, grinding a tiny amount every day.
Nope, cutting the curved tempered glass has been the "Holy Grail" top choppers have been searching for since the first car with it was chopped.

|41International||I would think any kind of glass can be cut. My wife does stained glass and has a saw to cut glass. It is called a ring saw and has a ring about 6 in. in diameter for a blade with dimonds glued to it. The blade is expensive about $100 and the saw cost $500 I think. I would think a good glass shop would have some kind of saw. If the glass is lamanated the plastic in the center might gum up the blade not sure never tried it. Good luck Mark|

The back glass can not be cut, it is tempered. The windshield, there are people who can cut it without a problem.

Yes the curved glass can be cut but very few people can cut it. A friend
of mine had one cut for his chevy pickup. I have the guy's name and
phone no. in Big Springs Tx. if you need it.

Cutting Glass on a '56 Buick
i've never heard of anyone succesfully cutting glass for a chop top on a 56 wrap around. Has anyone ever seen it done? if not, i've seen a few chopped '56s; new glass? sink existing glass into body?
