I called the local autoparts store and I asked about a rebuild kit for a 400 small block. They told me that it would cost me $1200.00 is this the right price for a rebuild kit? or are they trying to scam me? They also told me that I could bring it to them and have someone rebuild it for me for $1800.00. If anyone knows a sight on the net for rebuild kits would it be possible for someone to let me know where I could get them cheaper.
Northern Auto Parts have about the best prices around for kits. Thing is, check the kit you chose very carefully. They usually use top quality parts and I`ve gotten countless kits from them without any issue. While I would recommend you check the pistons before you order, find out what pistons are included and ask the compression height, make sure they are 1.560.
Most "rebuilder" pistons are 1.540, this kills quench, compression and power.
Another good thing about there performance kits is you get to pick what you`d like, in the performance master rebuild kit you even get to pick a cam.
I would wait until i had a machine shop check the block and crank both before ordering the kit.... Then once you know how far everything needs to go, order the kit......Now is also a good time to be stewing on what cam and heads you want to use That way you can get pistons that will work with which ever heads you are going to use...
