My dad told me a way he has checked rear end ratios - put the rear of the car on jackstands, put it in neutral, mark the tire and driveshaft. Then watch the driveshaft while making 1 full rotation of the tire. I did this, and my driveshaft went around 1.7 times (couldn't be a 1.7 rear end......) Am I missing something? Am I supposed to multiply that number by 2 (would make a 3.42, makes more sense). Please let me know....
Non posi "open rear" is: Leave one tire on the ground, rotate the other with chalk marks on driveshaft & tire. Turn the wheel 2 turns. Count the turns on driveshaft.
If you checked with both wheels off the ground, the wheel on the far side might have turned while you couldn't see it, and thrown your result off. Do it like F&J said.
It takes a little longer, but, for more accuracy, turn the wheel 20 times.
