Just a suggestion, if you are hitting the bottom side of the header pipe can you build a 1/2 inch spacer for your moter mounts to raise the engine enough to clear the headers, if so it would be better than denting the header or grinding the steering. I would do both moter mounts to keep the engine level.

header hitting steering joint
hi,i would carefully grind the steering joint,as long as you can see how much you are going to have to grind. if it looks like you will not have a safe joint (having to remove too much metal from joint) do NOT grind it. best is lift engine and dimple header pipe,first use a magic marker to mark where the dimple goes. dimple minimun necessary to clear.

headers hitting steering coupler!?
1972 scamp, 318, summit headers, power steering
headers are close enough to the steering column that when i make a right turn, the headers stop the steering shaft from turning (which is kinda scary).
do i take a die grinder to the steering coupler, beat the headers while still in the car(very difficult and possible damage to car) or pull the motor half out take the centerlink out and remove the header THEN beat on it?
right now im partial to grinding the steering coupler. its just hitting on the protrusions at the top corners
