Whats Wrong With Grease Guns ???

I never expected this many replies to this post.It was kind of funny at the time,I had bought a grease gun on sale at UAP/NAPA in the town of Berwick NS,but never used it for over a year because I was driving a feed truck and had acess to an air powered greaser and use of the garage whenever I wanted it.Then when the feed mill shut down I went to use my brand new grease gun, well there was no way it would work.I took it to the UAP/NAPA guys in New Minas NS and the new manager there used to be the manager in Berwick,so they exchanged it even without a receipt, because he knew me.That one wouldnt work either,so I took it back, they took it apart and looked it all over, took another one apart, switched parts around, still wouldnt work.By this time, even the manager,Blaine, had grease up to his elbows, finally he said the heck with it and gave me the best one they had in the store, and although it works, sometimes,it still isnt what I would call perfect.

x2... mine is an ancient estate sale find, only the rubber plunger is swollen and a b* to get in when changing tubes.

red_rider52 I have to agree with 57halfton. I also had my best luck with Lincoln grease guns. I operate a backhoe and use a grease gun everyday. If every fitting is having a hard time taking the grease try replacing the tip with one made my Lincoln 9 times out of 10 it will work better.

lumberjacknooj I've said my share of swears to a greasegun as well. Used to grease helicopters- Needed three hands to use the dang gun, and at least one to hold on to the side of the helicopter so you don't fall off... Had to be creative sometimes to get to where you could pump it- just to end up with an air bubble

Never had the cartridges- always had a 5 gallon bucket or 1 quart cans to fill it with. It was always funny when someone would bump the rod out of the locked position while filling, and send a couple pounds of grease flying

But I bet if the grease gun was powered be electricity you could take your DVOM and find a way to fix it..

Actually, I've never had a problem with my Lincoln electric gun. If you put a long whip hose on the gun, you can lay it on the ground and pump it. Negates the need for a third hand or you can just pull the switch with the electric. With a needle on the Lincoln, it will squirt grease 50 feet. Convenient for greasing things you can't reach like blackbirds.

57halfton Grease guns , what a topic. Here is my two cents worth!
I am a lube technician by trade , in simpler terms an oiler on heavy equipment at a large rock quarry. I fuel and lube all the equipment everyday. I do have a preference in both hand held manual grease guns and air powered grease guns. I like Lincoln (not Lincoln Electric as in welding) they don't last me forever but the way I use them they seem to work best and longer than other brands iv'e tried.
Also a pistol grip style hand gun for 2 hand operation , thats all I use in a manual gun.
Follow the directions on the grease tube and the side of the gun tube as to which way the piston lip goes for bulk or cartage grease.
Keep it Lubed , Gene

malc We donīt even get greaseguns here that use cartridges I have to reload mine from a five liter can.
Once Iīm done loading the critter, greasing the car is a breeze.
Tend to get a lot of greasegun farts

brian0605 GOOD ONE DOC!!!!!!!!!!!LMAO-ROF. Thats why I just take my wifes van to work when I want to grease it. I have the overhead reel I use on our fleet of 72 trucks,it's got a drum pump, so you can make a real frigg'in mess but at least it isn't on the carpet!!! Brian

docvette Doc here,

I've never, Ever, had a problem with grease guns..in all my years..

And the remedy is soooo simple..

Simply pay the guy at jiffy Boob $20 Fazools to do it for you...

By the time you blow up 2 or 3 "Well Engineered" grease guns,...

4 or 5 tubes of gloppy~Arsed grease dripping all down your sleeve and shirt, filling your breast pocket..(making your non~Filter camels smoke like they need a ring job..)

Snapping off a few Zerk Fittings, trying to "Hold the day~um gun" , Pump the Day~um thing..and hold the Day~um Greasy hose tightly on the Day~um zerk fitting..(The instructions NEVER told you: You are Required to grow a third Arm/hand For this operation) ...

Reinventing the wheel to try and get the now busted Zerk fittings Out of what was previously a well greased pivot point..

Finding out that Grease Really Smokes a long time on hot headers..and seems to live forever under intense heat..and smells like a BBQ at a wrecking yard..

Using 196 Red shop rags for 12 zerk fittings..that seem to leak like a sieve..

Finding that a greased Drive belt is NOT necessarily a good thing for continuous operation..

Two hours in the shower...

One point Five hours Cleaning the ring out of the tub, and sink bowl..

two hours washing the towels and wash cloths (along with your shirt..Two More bottles of shout..)

Four hours in the Laundromat..

Two bottles of shout applied to the shirt..

One New pack of Camels...

30 minutes of cleaning it off your shoe sole..(after you tracked it across the white carpet to the bathroom and kitchen to get another brewski..)

2 Bottles of Resolve Carpet cleaner..

Rental of Steam cleaner Before the main squeeze gets home...(and REALLY gives you a grease job..)

Watching Fido, cover his ears and eyes with his paws, in total disdain, knowing full well, If you don't clean this disaster up before the Female of the Species returns home..you'll be sharing the "Bunk house tonight" in the backyard together again..

Watching the Young Tech at Jiffy Boob inflict all this self abuse upon himself for $8 Fazools an hour..PRICELESS!!!

That $20 Fazools don't look so awfully bad now...
