texastomeh THANX Guys!

I really appreciate the suggestions! You've certainly given me some things to consider!

It sounds like the consensus thus far is that since I'm gonna' do some work anyway - junk the existing points system.

DOC - I Really appreciate the pictures! You came through as always!!

BTW, SPEEDYDUDE - after careful reconsideration, maybe a 'Bird would not have been such a good idea back in those days. After all, they do have bucket seats!

docvette Doc here,

I'm not a Ford guy at all..that being said..I do know that there were 2 types of Dura~Spark systems. Dura Spark I and Dura spark II..

IF you go with that type of system, you need to determine which will work with your engine..(probably DS I ) .

Dollar for Dollar, and hassle wise..you might want to consider a NEW MSD conversion kit..This way you have Instructions, and know the system is new, (and not sat in a wrecking yard after years of abuse) ,And has warranty. It probably won't cost you that much more either..

speedydude I would never say owning a t-bird is the dark side. They're one of my fave's. If it were mine and I wanted that stock look, I would install a Pertronix distributor. If your's is still tight, they make a conversion kit that's not too expensive. My dizzy was shot so I chucked it. New was 220.00 at Jegs. Works really well and you can adjust the advance curve nicely. If you really want total stock look you can put on the cap that COLKERR mentioned that has the dwell adjust window, you'll just never use it. Just my opinion, John

BTW, my bride and I started dating in a '66 t-bird

P.S.

If you find the right year the distributor cap will be the same size as the stock point style one, thus giving it a "stock" apperance.

This is an easy one.
Go to an auto wrecker (preferably a u-pick type), and find a mid to late 70's ford pick up with a 390 or 360. Pull the distribuer out along with the coil. On the left side inner fender there will be a square silver ignition module. Take this as well. Now, carefully remove the wire harness. This wiring is all connected together except for two wires that come out of the module. These wires can be spliced together and hooked up to your old coil positive wire. The rest of the harness just hooks up the same way it came out. This is why I keep the coil as it has the proper pins that accept the harness. Good luck

Need Advice on Ford 390 FE Ignition!!!!

Guys,

As you can probably tell from my avatar - I'm a "Cheavy Guy"!

However, in a moment of weakness here in my senior years, I have "gone over to the dark side" and bought a FORD (a '63 T'Bird Coupe). Seriously, I have ALWAYS thought that the "Bullet Birds" ('61 thru '63) were among the THE sexiest cars ever!

The car is currently a "driver". I plan to do some restoration and upgrades and make it into a "Saturday Night Cruiser", plus use it for some short Route 66, Bluebonnet, and Fall Color type road trips with my bride.

This is NOT planned or intended to be a performance ride (as if a '63 Bird could be! ). I 've got my '53 Corvette Replica for that! I don't plan to invest a lot in it , but neither am I trying to do it on the cheap.

Now to the point (no pun intended): What would you guys do to/with the ignition? I going to install all new parts (plugs, wires, etc.), but what about the distributor? Should I just stay with the points? Install a breakerless conversion? Go to HEI? Other? I would like to keep it relatively simple.

I just want to end up with a cool dependable ride that we SHOULD have had 40+ years ago (my bride and I started dating in 1963)

Here's your chance to help spend my retirement!
