Hey Doc or any one who has tried to trigger an hei module with points?

I saw in an old thread how Doc described using an hei module with a points dist.Using the points to replace the magnetic pickup Has anyone tried this?I understand the principle basically the same as the testgm uses to check for spark by connecting the W and G terminals of the module then breaking the connection causing the module to fire the coil.My ? is will this work as along term solution? And will it affect timing drastically?

Why would you want to do this? The whole point (pun sort-of intended) of an electronic ignition system is to eliminate the points and associated wear that degrades performance. If you plan to run points, just run points.

If you want HEI in a small body distributor, there are several vendors who install the reluctor and pickup coil in the window-style distributor bodies. The HEI module gets mounted externally. This is basically what GM did with the UHV distributors in the 1960s (the difference, of course, is that the electronics technology of the day required a box the size of an MSD6 to get the equivalent function of the little HEI module). You can probably even do this conversion yourself, since the HEI distributor shaft should be able to fit into a comparable points distributor. Just swap the pickup coil onto the points plate first.

Doc here, :pimp:

You must have misread whatever post you are referring to...I never outlined using Points with a module at all...

Even IF you could graft the two..you defeat the purpose of the electronics..Speed and accuracy without mechanical change or wear.

You are making a step Backward.

The only reason I was looking at this was due to space constraints with an old edelbrockC3b intake. And since it belongs to my kid I get to foot the bill LOL! the problem I am having with the points set up is low output, the resistor I have seems to have to high a resistance only geting 4.8 to 5 volts at the coil and can't seem to find the correct ohm ballast. If you could point me in the right direction on what ohm or wattage to get I would appreciate it.

Doc here,

Replace the coil..The primary is probably on the way out.

With a DVOM set to OHMS scale, R x 1, Calibrated to "000", all wires removed, measure the primary, it should be less than an OHM, but more than "000", out of that range, toss it.

Setting your scale to R X 20 K or higher, measure the secondary, It should read between 10,000 and 11,000 Ohms, out of that range toss it.

When/IF you replace the coil..

Get a performance, Oil filled coil, good up to around 40 KV..and install that over your stock 15 to 20 KV coil. Along with you will need to upgrade to 8.5 mm Spiral Core plug wires, and re-gap to about 42 thousands.

As far a Electronic, HEI.. Company's like MSD make conversion kits for modules and pickups for your Distributer..so the larger dizzy isn't required in a space issue. Just order the kit.

points distributor

i had the same problem with a car that i bought with a chevy engine. after checking the coil i noticed on the side of the coil it said---internal resistor--so i removed the resistor from the circuit and had correct voltage to the distributor. this might be something for you to check. good luck
