454C10 3.73 is ok but I would use a little more stall. 2500 should be a good one to use with the 3.73. A 3.73 used with a 327 will lower the stall a few hundred rpm due to less low rpm torque and a higher gear. A 2000 stall will feel weak off the line.

A 3.73 with a 700r OD will yield a 2.70 top gear. Which is 2500 rpm at 72mph with a 26 inch tire. So, a 2500 stall should be ok. You can get that in a lock up converter also.

A 270H will make more low rpm torque and a 280H will pull harder on the top end. So, both cams will work fine, just choose the cam that better suits your needs. A roller will make more torque and hp but adds to the cost a lot. You really will have a hard time feeling the difference with the flat tappet versus the roller cam.

I'm thinking you will like the 270H better than the 280H. In both cases, use 10:1 cr with aluminum heads. 9.5:1 minimum. You will find it is harder to build compression with a 327. A 350 with flat tops and a 64 cc head is the perfect combo for you. A 327 will need domes to make that compression and domes are bad on flame travel. Plus the extra 1/4 stroke of a 350 makes a big difference. If you ever get a chance, use a 350 crank.

Also avoid the newer flat tappet cam grinds (xtreme, voodoo, ect). They tend to go flat quickly due to very aggressive cam lobes. The 270H and 280H grinds have been around for a lot of years and are already aggressive enough. And, use diesel engine oil with your new cam, as recommended by compcams if you use flat tappets.

chewyscool thanks alot 454c10 I found that article very informative and seeing about baseing my motor on the one in the article and your advice of alm. heads. Do you have any advice on the 3.73 gearing with a 2000 stall?

However, I would use aluminum heads and more compression for better low rpm torque.

chewyscool I was thinking of gearing 3.73 with a LSD. I do want the torque and power in the lower rpms for street use. Thanks.

454C10 You are right. That isn't a cam for bottom in torque. However, he didn't ask for bottom end torque. He whats 400hp and neck snapping torque. That is what the gears and high rpm stall converter is for. The engine will not spend much time in the lower rpms and will have neck snapping torque in the upper rpms. Plus, it takes a good amount of duration to make 400hp with a 327. A short duration low rpm torque cam will fall very short of the 400hp goal.

i don't think thats correct cam duration for bottom end torque. i think you need some thing like 210 or 212 intake duration @ .050 . the higher you go in duration the more the bottom end will suffer.

454C10 Need gears (4.11's with LSD) and a 3000 stall converter

Better heads (after market, 64cc chambers, 160 to 180cc intake ports). 170cc Edelbrock Performer heads (not rpm) would be a good choice.

High compression with aluminum heads (10.0 to 10.5 cr)

Roller cam would help a lot to make more torque (225 to 230 degrees duration at 0.050, 108 to 110 LSA)

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (not air gap) and a Holley 750cfm 3310.

Full length headers (1-5/8 tubes with 2-1/2 collectors)

You can make 400 ftlbs of torque and 400hp with a 327 but it will be in the upper rpms which requires a lot of gear and a loose converter.

red65mustang for "neck snapping torque" (400ft/lbs+) it's gotta be atleast 350 cube and 383 is a better choice....

327NUT Pretty simple fix, you have a large journal 327, its the same as a 350 block so either put a 350 crank in it and have a 350 or buy a GOOD 383 stroker kit.

DoubleVision Sure I`ll build it, but your gonna pay me afterwards! ha.
You want 400 horsepower and lots of torque then the writings on the wall, get more cubic inches. While 327`s are outstanding engines, they have a shorter stroke and stroke is where torque is at. I`d suggest a 350, or even better, a 383 if you really want a torque monster. However, 400 horses from a 350 is easy as well. Your stock heads aren`t going to cut it, don`t waste your money on them. I`d suggest a set of vortecs or better, and a better intake also. Cam it accordingly matched with the compression ratio and carb size with a set of headers and your there. We need to know what the rear gear ratio is as gears play a big role in this. your goal of 400 horses and lots of torque is simple with a 383, and it`ll be a blast to drive and won`t break the bank.

Build my 327

I'm looking for advice, suggestions and comments for my engine build. I'm looking for around 400 HP and neck snapping torque for a weekend street 67 nova. I have 327 large journal (69') 481 heads, 365 Hp gm iron intake, and carter afb not sure about the cam. Most of these parts are for 60's vettes as per my research, its turning a 700r4, with stock 10 bolt. I'm not satisfied with the performance that I'm getting. I feel the car is sluggish although I have never taken it to a track. Feel free...............
