Hey All.
Just wanted to share a 500 Caddy story that shows the great tourque these things make.
A guy on one of my Caddy forums put a basically stock caddy 500 in his 70 Monte carlo. It has a 3.70 geared rear and a turbo 350 tranny. It ran 14.3 in the 1/4. The neat thing is that on a track engine dyno, it only made 210 horsepower! Not sure on the tourque, but probably around 380-420 going by the 70-77 500 Caddy figures. Thats a 3700-3800 lb car. I just found it rear incredible that a big car with basically a stock engine and gearing could run this fast.
Anyway, Im thru gabbing. HG

That Monte is in the 10's now. He's still running a stock bottom end with cast rods and pistons. Mid summer he broke a stock rocker. I guess that will happen when you turn a stocker 6400 rpm all season.

Here is the link to his sight. One very fine looking piece.

Now lets see.....Take one light weight Gremlin with lots of rubber out back..... and add one of these big old Caddy motors....add a liberal amount of spray..... You do the math. Dan

At 5000 rpm, you will never have a problem.

At 5500 rpm, you will have more problems with rocker clips busting than rods.

At 6000 rpm, you are on borrowed time with rockers and rods.

Being a cast rod, detonation is very bad. Forged steel will give a bit, where cast won't. Cast cracks when is subjected to a sharp rap. Detonation produces the same symptoms of parts being struck with a hammer.

If you are still unsure of the rods duribility, a set of 455 Olds rods will give you the security your looking for. Hang a set of Keith Black hypereutectic pistons on them and you will be safe to the max rpm your heads will flow. In a normal asperation build, a stock head will peter out by 5000. If you go the ported route, 5800.

I just realized something from your last post..... Hehehe.......I told you to E-mail me if you had any more questions, or something you didn't understand. Know who I am now? Dan

I don't have any right now....I don't think? I'll look around, no guarantees. You can always hit ebay. On a quick pass I found these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1873512105

The guy has some negative feedback, but with the number of sales you can expect that. Dan

Hey Panhead Pete.
Havent really got to do much lately. Car is at my buds house waitin for the rear end to come out for some tweakin, but If the 500 is goin in by summer, Im wanting to swap from the 4.56 to a 3.23 or 3.55 gear due to the massive tourque they make. So, Im waitin to see.
The 500 is in the caddy and its a fwd, but the motor is in like a normal engine and its a pain to get out. Got about another hour and it will be ready to pull. Should have some pics in a while for ya. cya all. HG :D
