I would suggest using a 250 I6 with with either the Argentian, Assuie or one of the new aluminum aftermarket heads for the 250 I6 I've been hearing about.

The 300 six is about 36" long overall..so you can do a quick measurement to see if it might fit..try looking on car-part.com for one of those as they are common in F250 and F350 trucks as well as some of the heavier duty Ford farm trucks..
Now there are some other things that can be done to the 300 six..to give you and idea look up the Frenchtown Flyer on the web as he runs a 300 six..
This may not be the easiest swap ever done but sure could be worthwhile..

|Shoez||Just check any junkyard, there should be 300's in any 60's, 70's,80's and 90's F series pickups. Bad thing is in the carbed version, they only had about 130 HP give or take. EFI versions had about 165. A lot of torque though. That engine is tall though. don't know if it will fit under your hood. Especially the EFI version. The intake manifold is huge on these engines. And it had the bell housing pattern of the 302 and 351 W. If you are going to swap the tranny anyway, the V8 option is much simpler and gains will be much more. You could swap in a 2 barrel 351 Windsor and you would realize such an impressive gain over the 200. Hell, swap in a 5.0 EFI out of a crown Vic. Those engines are dime a dozen also, they you could have multi port fuel injection for cheap. I did this very swap in a 66 Bronco, going from a 170 to the speed density 5.0 from an 87 Cougar. I had less than a grand in it, including the wrecked donor car. And wow what a difference!!! Sorry about dropping the v8 idea, but the logic of since the 302 was in the car, a 300 must fit too, is not correct. The 300 was never a car engine, always a truck, and they hood height and length is there. Plus that speed parts for the 300 are pretty spendy. But , good luck with your endeavor.|

Yep, and really tall. The low hood line of the mav probably won't fit a long-stroke I6 like that.

They ( the 300 ) are a good bit longer and heavier than the six cylinder than came in your Maverick. It is heavier than a 289 or a 302 SBF ... I believe.

|the frog||a lot of the f 150's had the 300 i 6. you should be able to find one in a yard somewhere. im not sure about the late 90s, but the late 80s ,early 90s they were a dime a dozen. i had a couple of mid 80s with the 300 in them.one of the toughest engines ford ever built. more dependable than the 302.don't know about getting it to outrun the 280 though. that will be a tuffy.|

300 I6 Maverick?
i am considering putting a 300 in-line six in my 1974 Maverick and i want to know how hard are they to come by. I've done some minor research and i found that that it was discontinued in 96', what 96' vans/trucks could i find one in. I've also read that the 87'-96' 300's had fuel injection and 155hp. my main issue is if it will fit in my Maverick with out having to make major changes , the way i see it is that if a 302 can fit so can a 300 I6.
the reason for the 300I6 is that my older brother has a 73' Datsun 280Z with a fuel injected 6cyl way bigger than mine with 160hp. my goal is to be able to outrun or at least keep up with his 280Z with out putting a V8 in my car.
("just dropping in a V8 is the easy way out!")
