|fiscus||Just thought I'd throw this in since it wasn't mentioned, I think the triangle advances the cam 4 degrees and the rectangle retards it.|

|Hot Rod Hooligan||
Find tdc on #1 cyl.
The timing mark on the crank sprocket should be on top
install the cam sprocket properly
Line up the 2 timing marks so they are facing each other
Crank timing mark on the very center at the top, and cam timing mark on the very center at the bottom of their respective sprockets.
install the timing chain.

|awoodman||That's what my machinist said, but I don't really want to spend the $160 or whatever for a timing set or do i not need to?|

|CNC BLOCKS NE||If its a performance cam your installing it a good idea to actually degree it in to make sure its where its suppose to be.|

There should be a mark on each of the three keyways that correspond to 3 different marks on the teeth; IE 0 to 0;
+4 to +4;
-4 to -4;
or a triangle
was there not an instruction sheet in there?
post a pic of the gear (a picture is worth a thousand words)

|awoodman||Well what I mean is that I can't align the keyway with the zero mark. The zero mark is between 2 keyways. There are no marks aligned with the keyways.|

Align with the zero mark, that should index the cam per the cam card. The other keyways will advance or retard the cam, which is not what you want to do if you speced your cam correctly.
We use a sleeve over the snout and tap the gear on.

Cloyes timing set?
I just got a Cloyes Original true roller timing set. I'm attempting to put it on, but have a few questions. I have a SBC building engine book that tells how to build the whole engine. My cloyes crank gear has 3 keyways. In my engine book, for 3 keyway sprockets, it says to align the "O" with the key on the crank. The O is directly between 2 of the 3 keyways. What do I do? And what's the best way to install the crank gear?
