I know some have read this and some may have seen the video. What would you have done about this. I for one am all for law enforcement. We need it in this society but it seems to me quite a few are taking it to the limits anymore. I think he should be punished to the fullest but that is my $.02 worth. Anyone that does this, law officer or not should be punished but we are supposed to look up to them and show them respect. Yea, this is a real good way to earn respect... http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/01/09/police.kill.dog/index.html

I'd been in jail for sure for assaulting a Police Officer. That is no different than shooting a 5yr old boy...Pets (Dogs especially,)become part of a family like children do. When a pet gets sick or dies you are sad just the same...at least I am. I had to put a dog we had to sleep because of health reasons and it was definately a sad moment because you lose a 'member' of your family.
I am sure that I am not the only one that feels this way. I would sue, sue, sue the PD for that one for sure.

Not all cops are crooked I know... I have met some nice ones... although one did threaten to beat me (no reason to do so either) and others have accused me and my friends for doing things we didn't like vadalizing and then running away (I was too pissed to be able to run)

Anyhow... because of this I do not trust any police officers... seems they let just anybody be a cop now... Thats why I choose to not trust and stay away unless they show to me that they are gunna respect me... after that I will actually talk to them and respect them...

If they don't I shut my mouth and don't say anything or else I don't know what I would do...

The POLICE have their agenda and it dosn't always appeal to the general public. I have seen in the NEWS POLICE break into peoples homes only to find they were in the wrong house or for the wrong reason and be sued. The emotinal TRAMA this family feels will never go away. In their eyes and the eyes of a LOT of people the POLICE will NEVER be the GOOD GUYS. The situation did NOT call for this kind of POLICE ACTIONS. This uncalled for KILLING and the HANDLING of this family was WRONG and under no cercumstances should it be allowed to be repeated. We are not all common criminals and should NOT be treated as such. The POLICE expect to be treated with RESPECT and so do the people they SERVE. Sometimes the POLICE NEED our help, what if they are ignored or treated with SCORN by the general public. This is only one incident of the POLICE overreacting to a situation. It happens a lot more than anyone knows. Ask any Biker how they are treated by the COPS. What are you going to do. They have the right to hold a gun on you and demand you submit to their will. Let Freedom Ring.

I tried to see the video feed supplied with the article but don't have a Radio One Superpass and was not allowed to view it. I can't imagine how a cop could be so stupid, to pull over a family and not even have the common sense to get them out of the car one by one making sure the dog couldn't get out. If that dog had been an attack dog then it would have made extra sense to ensure that it was not able to exit the car and put lives at risk. Either way, attack dog or playful pet, the cop should have done everything in his power to ensure everyone's safety by keeping the dog in the car. The family claimed they warned the cop first thing that they had a dog in the car and didn't want it to get loose. I say we shoot that cop with his own shotgun if the story is accurate. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

I live about 30 miles from where this happened so I saw the video several times on the local news. That dog looked no different than any other "happy dog", tail wagging and looked more like he was looking for a spot to do his duty than anything else. And then "Barney" goes and lays down "THE LAW" on him. You know what happens when you assault let alone shoot one of thier dogs, this should be no different. There's NO WAY that "officers" life was in danger! I know they have to take certian precautions, but if he's so nutless in a "situation" like this, he should find another career. I mean you don't see the mailman carrying a SHOTGUN do'ya? This piece of **** went totally over the line and should be made an example of! Put yourself in this family's position, I could only imagine how they feel. And what about that $hitheel that called them in in the first place? I bet she feels REAL good about what she did, exaggerating the situation like she did. I hope others have learned to keep thier traps shut unless they speak the FACTS and not speculations. That's just two cents of my buck fifty on this and other situations.

I understand the way an officer must take extra precautions when dealing with a "potential" criminal but a lot of these cops (to me and from what I have read about different places) are just looking for a reason to pull the trigger on something. They are going to have to realize that there are people with video cameras and the video cameras in the cruisers will nail them if out of line. Quite a few times the adrenaline rush overtakes them. I've watched them on the COPS show before take a person down only to have another 12 take a flying jump on the pile and tag the guy. I think some of that crap is really overreacting a little bit. The fifteen or sixteen year old that was cuffed and then picked up and slammed back down was a good example. I imagine the cop that shot the dog will have his paybacks somehow. You know the people of that community will surely be against having him on the force let alone having him pull you over for something.

Being a retired Deputy, I want to add my .02 cents worth. When you pull a car over you NEVER know what you are going to find. In this case, a gal on a cell phone called 911 and told dispatch that "some guy just passed me going about 110 MPH and there is a lot of money flying off of his car and onto the road." Do prudent people drive 110 MPH? Do prudent people have monet flying off of their car? Humm, sounds like something is not quite right here. So the cops did what is called a 'felony stop' which is where you draw your weapons, hide behind the squad car and use the loudspeaker to order the driver to throw the keys out the window, exit the vehicle, place your hands on your head and walk backward toward the squad car, then kneel down. The driver complied and when the officers ordered his wife out of the car he yelled to her to "stop the dog." Apparantly she didn't hear him because she opens the car door, and the dog quickly exits, then circles around to the side of the nearest officer. Let's stop for a moment and look at this situation from the cops standpoint. It is dark. Why was this guy going 110 MPH? What is the deal with all the money flying from the car? (It turns out the guy had just refueled, laid his wallet on the roof and forgot it.) The cops don't know if this guy is a drug dealer or a citizen in a hurry. Was this dog going to bite the cops, especially when the owner yelled to his wife (or accomplice) to "stop the dog." Does that mean the dog is a trained killer and could inflict bodily damage upon a law enforcement officer? Or was it just the family pet that will lick the officers face if given the chance. OR, is it the family pet that becomes protective of its owners and will attack if it thinks its owners are in trouble. Turns out it is 'normal' family who had their dog along. No one will ever know what the dog's intentions were. In the video the dog was in the lower right hand corner, kind of in the dark. Unless you were there one can't really say why the demeanor of the dog was at that exact instant. Have you ever been bitten by a dog? It can be terrifying, as well as deadly. Perhaps the owner should be glad the cops didn't shoot him instead of the dog!

That sheet is Waaaay outta line!!!
Police officers are trained to convey the situation also...If some trigger-happy cop is willing to shoot an obviously non-dangerous animal(dog at this certain time) then how hard would it be for him to shoot someone on 'accident'?
How would you feel if you got into a taxi in say... New York City...and the driver takes you to your requested destination. As you are reaching into your jacket pocket to pay the driver he fires off a couple shots at you because 'he never knows what to expect'...For all he knew you were pulling a gun on him to rob HIM. More than likely this wouldn't happen because the driver surveyed the situation and realized that you were getting cash out and not a 9MM...and perhaps we should be glad that you are still not on the force?
A police officer should have the neccesary training to determine what they feel is the correct thing to do...no excuses

Officer Perkins; It's people with your mentallity that make the public give the police all the respect and credit they deserve. How the hell does money on the car roof, or driving 110, translate to you that the driver's pet is a cop killer? And this call may have been a scheme from a possible disgruntled neighbor or coworker! Good thing she didn't say that 17 year old male had acne or piercings or your comrade would have killed him first. I bet you pulled over that Rodney fella, too. Thank God you're retired.

I've been bitten by several dogs, one at posey's junkyard in Indiana (took two kicks and a left hook to get him off my arm) . And I'll tell you what, from the looks of this dog, a good kick to the throat would have sufficed if attacked, let alone the PEPPER SPRAY. This guy's life was NOT in danger from the dog, and there were plenty of officers present to handle the occupants of the vehicle. Now, let's say that officer was the only/first one to respond, then by all means he would need to take care of anything that would be a distraction. In that case, I could see maybe shooting the dog no matter how tragic the outcome, after all it was a felony stop. This guy was WRONG. And did you hear the 911 call, this lady mentioned ROBBERY (speculation). I believe they were never speeding any more than normal for interstate driving (most of us do). I do believe this lady that called in, exaggerated the incident in order to get a more prompt responce. I asked a friend of mine (who's an officer) and he said at the very least it's borderline and he pesonally thinks it could have been avoided simply by staying back and letting the occupants exit the vehicle like you're supposed to do in a felony stop. What would have happened if the dog attacked the officer that was at the pass side door? Somebody would have been in the crossfire/hit by accident, or a shot would never have been fired. They probably would have simply used pepper spray like they should have in the first place (at the most). Again, this guy was WRONG.

I would be jail (or dead) right now if that were my dog! How can anyone justify this! I thought all that fancy "training" was to enable the officer to handle a "potential threat"...without using deadly force! That "Blast em with the 12 guage!" mentality shows this guy has no business being a cop, or owning a gun!!!!!! <img src="graemlins/boxing.gif" border="0" alt="[boxing]" />

JUST READ THIS, OPINION IS, EVER SINCE TO 911 SITUATION ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE BEEN MORE OR LESS OUT OF CONTROL UNDER THE GUISE OF PROTECTION. LOOK AT ALL THE UNAUTHORIZED SURVAILENCE, INVESTIGATION, ETC PRESENTLY IN PROGRESS. AS LOKG AS WE, WILL ALLOW THIS BEHAVIOR BY UNIFORMED OFFICIALS IT WILL CONTINUE, AND CONTINUE TO ESCILATE UNTIL WE HAVE A POLICE STATE TO DEAL WITH. SEEMS AS THOUGH NOW THERE IS NO LIABILITY FOR OFFICIAL ACTIONS NO MATTER HOW OUTRAGIOUS THEY MAY BE.

How can they be murdered if they r unborn???I don't know what to think about abortiongs any more.In some cases I think they should be alowed the option. For example:if some girl is raped of something and she gets pregnit. She didnt have any control over that.So she should have the choice. But if some girl goes to a party and get knocked up,thats her own stupidity and there for live with the consoquens. But I cant say for sure kuz I don't know what it is like to be pregnet.

My Doubleday Desk Dictionary says abour murder, "To kill (a human being) with premeditated malice", "To kill in a barbarous or inhumane manner, slaughter". I think we all know in our hearts that an unborn baby is a person, but we have been calloused by the drumbeat of 'unviable tissue mass", or "fetal tissue".

Granted, our society presents us with gut wrenching moral decisions when it comes to the creation of a child by rape or incest, but that represents only a VERY SMALL fraction of the cases. It is intellectually dishonest to use those cases for making a larger generalization. We all know that the vast majority of these killings are for convenience and that is emotionally devestating if you let your human compassion free from it's prison of political correctness. I have two of the sweetest baby grand kids that, by today's standards, should have been killed in the womb. What a terrible world it would have been if that had been done. I also have a grandson who never made it past his "mother's" wrath. I cry daily for the Hot Rod Pal I will never have in this life.

WILLY until the kid is born or at least develped to a certain.... THEY ARE SIMPLY A GROUP OF CELLS.. No thought... no heart beat, unable to breath or eat... hell.. sounds like a fungus to me... Wether you like it or not people have the choice on what to do because until that kid has a heartbeat it is part of your body and people are free to mutilate themselves if they want

I think at the very least this officer should be held personally responsible for his actions (pending law suits). Afterall it was HIS actions that caused this, and why should the people (that's where the department gets there funding) be responsible for this? That will be a good incentive for other officers to think about their actions. In the end it will no doubt be the taxpayers that settle any pending suits against the department. Even with that in mind, I hope this family gets a generous compensation not just for what they were put through, but to hopefully send a message that we wont tolerate this kind of BS. It's not the fact it was only a dog, it's a matter of principle. We can't afford to allow this kind of crap to become acceptable no matter to what degree.

Maybe I just shouldn't reply to anything that isn't in the dump??? <hr></blockquote>
Stoned puppy, I never singled you out in my post. Maybe you just have a complex? I posted about the shift in topic hoping you two (and yes I said TWO) would take the hint and let it go. Almost every topic that goes to the dump goes there because the discussion strays so far off the original topic that it becomes unsalvagable. You continued to post having nothing to do with the intended topic so I simply tried to pass along hint #2 again using the 'two' reference even though you were the only one continuing to post off topic. If you really need to debate the right to life issue start a new discussion but why ruin this one?
