JerryMopar My neighbor Mel has a 63 Belair 2dr with a built 350 (roller rockers/lifters, high lift-short duration cam, stock "rams horn" exhaust manifolds, stock Rochester 4bbl) With a two speed auto transmission and granny gears in the rear(not sure of ratio). Radial tires.

On the hiway, he can get about 25-30, city 20mpg! EXCELLENT power when you need it, squaks the tires loudly if you womp it at a stand-still. On the hiway it revs at about 3500, and is right in the middle of the powerband at 70 mph.
I passed a car once on a country highway when he let me drive it earlier this summer. I had three cars ahead of me, but opposing lane was clear for miles, I got in that lane and floored it. It shot off like a rocket, and pretty soon i was doing 85-90 when i passed the third car. It still had more to go, it was still pulling!!

spinn a manual trans connects the hotrodder to the hotrod. i gues thats what you connected with in those trucks.

the old 4 spd v8's 4bbl were a blast.

ford, didnt have too many i was ever in. a 65 mustang 289 4 spd toploader with 4.10 gears was nice. that was quick and wound out to a bunch of rpms, but you couldn't "drive it", but 40 mph around town. it was a race vehcile.

imo- FI cars dont have that "real" muscle car sound.

schnitz All the above choices are for vehicles I've barely seen, let alone driven. But, from experience with my trucks (former '93 C1500 3.73 posi geared 2wd ex-cab 4.3, 5 speed and my current '97 C1500 Silverado 3.73 posi 2wd ex-cab 3rd door 5.7, 4L60E 4 speed auto), I can safely say that the V6 and stick was much more fun and useful than the V8 and automatic. The only thing that my '97 is good for is the occasional roasting of the hides. Nothing more.

In a while, Chet.

what old combo's really worked well together?

not neccarily factory combo's/ my first example is the "cop 360" ( but in a 4dr dart) 9:1 308 heads(1.88/160 valves), LD340 factory intake, tuned holley 600 carb, 6.123" long rods, 275hp factory mopar cam .430/.444" lift , factory adjustable shaft rockers system, add a 4 speed with a lightened flywheel. with a 4 dr dart and 3.23 gears. it booked, and laid rubber everywhere. even with 6 people in the car. that factory purple shaft cam and 9:1 compression sounds classic muscle car through a pair of 2 1/4" walker mufflers. factory vacuum advanced HEI for ignition got 18 mgp's

the nova had a chevy 350", had the complete performer package .420/.440" cam , performer 750 carb/intake, hooker headers, with a 4 speed and 3.08 gears. mild ported/matched camel hump heads(1.95/1.50) set up for a performer cam around 9:1 compression. GM HEI with vacuum advance. 2 2 1/2" dynomax mufflers sounded classic as a drive in. that grocery getter could downshift to passing gear with a ton of wheel spin! got 15-16 mpg'

doesnt count but---
85-93 mustang 5.0 5 spd. my 89 302" 5.0GT example had the stock roller roller cam , FI with heads matched for it, performance air cleaner 3.08(3.42) gearing. flowmaster craze hit so i had 2 1/2 " 50's on it. sounded tuff. car drove like perfection. FI was well engineered, grabbing 2nd gear. then making it to 5th gear was really hauling. it was a new expirience. got 18 mpg's with OD.

what other vehicles do feel drive like perfection? in all speeds and conditions.
