Good point... the plot thickens. I'm going to try and figure out a way to have the outer floor (between the frame and body) welded to the body and the inner sections welded to the frame. That way the body can still come off. Dang, this is getting complicated. Time to stare at it awhile.

Looking at your project journal I see your roll cage is welded to your frame.
I think you're going to have to keep your floor separate from the body if you want it removable. You should be able to have tabs on the body to tie the floor into it for some added support. Just a thought.

Looks like a nice ride! Why not do it like Henry did (it looks like a Ford)? Use Webbing, Belting, (I've even heard of people using the underlayment for Roofing) for your Body Mounting on the Frame and build from there. You are right-the black color (although I like it) hides the Flange, but it looks like a solid place to start. I would keep the removable Body, but don't forget to bolt the Floor to the frame also-

I did my first Floor too and it was a bit intimidating-as they say, measure twice and cut once. Use Chipboard or Poster Board to make your patterns (making sure they fit under your Flange), Drill holes in the Flange for your rosette Welds, cut to size, roll some Beads in for strength, and Weld in (using Sheetmetal Screws to hold everything in place while you Weld). I ground my Welds down some (optional), painted it with Epoxy Primer and put on a Seam Sealer-done!

I don't know if they would help, but you can see some shots of my Floor pan install in my Journal-it's Black too (and dusty), but the more ideas the better-good luck!

robs ss This is how a 1969 chevelle floor pan is tied into the rockers, which is probably all together different then what you have, but its how they keep the strength of it because a lot of them are put in with only plug welds.

Slomotion34 Thanks for the info... here's what I am dealing with. The pics are shots of the frame and the door is open showing the rocker panel and the frame. Not great pics, but I think they'll show you what I am facing. I'd really like to keep the body removable (It's set up with 4 main mounting points that should be accessible with the body/floor in place). I really don't want a lot of rattles... so what do you recommend? This is my first floor (just in case the questions didn't give it away). Thanks!

You will probably get a lot of opinions on this, but I would recommend using 16 Gauge for Floorpans-most of the Street Rod replacement Floorpans are made of 16 gauge. I would use cold rolled (easier to Paint and finish-if this were a Drag Car I would use Aluminum, but not on the street-gets dented too easily, rocks, debris, etc.)-

It would be better to have some sort of Flange to weld to, although it is not imperative-please Post some pictures so we can see what you are working with. I would personally let the Body be removable, but you don't have to. I would recommend you purchase a Bead Roller from Harbor Freight (to keep the cost down), look on here as to how to reinforce it (so it won't flex all over the place) and go to town.

As far as cutting the 16 Gauge, I would recommend a Kett type of hand shear-like this style:

They can be purchased cheaper, but you get the idea-the only problem with a Kett is that it doesn't like tight corners, so I use a Nibbler for that-you will get a lot of opinions on here about which Tools to use to cut Metal. I would Weld to the Rocker Flange if possible, and then make your Channel pieces from there. Good luck, it is a fun project!

Slomotion34 I still have a few questions: What type and thickness of sheetmetal is best for floorpans? 16 ga? 18 ga? hot or cold rolled?

Where to attach it to the body? Rocker panels? The car is channeled about 7" and the only body left on the sides is the rockers (under the doors). I'm still wondering if I should keep the body removable from the frame (Don't know if there's a reason or not).

Floorpan Fab questions

I just got the body back on my freshly boxed frame with a rollbar and now it's time to get some floor/firewall installed. The car is completely hollow and I am debating on aluminum versus steel. I have no idea how to pick materials (What type and thickness/hot rolled/cold rolled, etc). I would also like to get opinions on attachment points - the car has been channeled about 6" and I don't know where to attach the floor pans to the side of the body (the very bottom of the rocker panel beneath the door?). Also, is there any advantage on leaving the body removable? I'll gladly post some pics if it helps. I have some basic tools (welder and basic handtools), but I don't have a roller or any idea about what kind of shear i'll need to do this. The car is a 34 Plymouth coupe. ANy help is greatly appreciated. Looks like 08 is the year to get this thing rolling again!
