SBC sheet metal intake manifold

when guys are making these. the runners, where they butt up next to each other at the ports. how do they weld these ? i see them welded on the outside all the way around. but there is no way to get a tig torch in between runners that are right next to each other. how do they do it ?

I think I know what you're looking for, if I was fabricating a sheet intake, I'd shape the runner ends to fit inside the flange opening, and weld them at the flange from the bottom, does that make sense? Just make the flange opening large enough so that when the runner tube is fitted inside it's large enough to port match after welding.

I've seen aluminum foil used for an air dam to keep the argon around the welding area, A friend welded space shuttle pieces, he said that military duct tape was sometimes used to create a pocket around a weld area. Said it worked better than home center regular duct tape.
