Tubbing an S10 - How Much?????

I have an 89 S10 that I am considering tubbing for some wider slicks. This truck is a drag race only truck so streetability is not a concern. My question is, does anyone know how much I would need end to narrow the rear for a tub job? I know it depends on how wide of a tire I want to run but I am looking for someone that has already done this and get their opinion on what works and looks the best. If anyone has any pictures of a tubbing project, that would be nice to have since this will be my first time doing this.

Thanks

Agree with speedydude. Get the wheels and tires (mounted). Determine where you want the outside of the tire to be on the truck and measure that side to side. Set the two tire/wheel assemblies on the garage floor the same width you measured on the truck. Now, measure from the inside mounting surface of one wheel to the rear mounting surface of the other wheel and you have your differential width axle to axle.

Here's a shot or two of the rear.. What I have in my backhalf is kinda to the extreme. But a real quick breakdown. Frame rails were like $400, probably another $400 for the 4 link setup, have about the same is my shocks and springs. The rear itself is around $2000 - $2500 with brakes. Almost all of the rear suspension is powder coated. Since I don't weld to the degree that I'd be comfortable doing the brackets and cage. I think that ran me around $1600. All the tin work, etc... was just my time... A truck is a bit easier because your dealing only with a bed bodywise. Guessing I would say around $5K. For an S10 there are kits available - does make it a whole lot easier..

Old picture, redid the brakes, other odds and ends..

If your looking for a kit to tub your truck try s &w race cars they sell specialized kits and narrowed rears per application. There stub welds in and then you cut out your original frame after. They will tell you what size rim and tire and all. I used their kit on my 55 chevy and it worked great. You might want to take alook at their stuff . Just some thoughts, Tim
