|bigshow2||I knew it wasnt gonna be cheap,its a Vette,there aint much "cheap" on a Vette. It was not running when my father got it,so we traded an F-150 4x4 for it. I will shop around for prices on just having it stripped. A friend of mine wants to paint it for me. As far as cross fires go it runs great. It only lists at 209 hp but it throws you back in the seat and hugs curves like a Vette should. I still have some work to do to it because it sat for about a year. It stumbles when you go full throttle,I believe a fresh tune up and a new fuel filter will cure that prob..As far as being able to keep the tools i'm more a mechanical person. I am a mechanic by trade and have minimal body experience.I'm just trying to restore it and maybe put it in some shows. Any suggestions for chrome engine parts would really be appreciated.Any web sites selling parts for this car would also be appreciated. Thanks to all of you for your input.|

Don't give up that idea just yet until you get some estimates.
First any shop that says the car does not need to be stripped, burn rubber to get out of that place as they don't know vettes.
Also working on a vette is totally different then a metal car and you will find that the estimates from someone that knows how to do these cars are going to be eight grand and up on a good day.
Any less and I would be wanting to see customer vettes they did before.
This is why, the best deals you will find when buying a vette is one where someone gel-coated it or the car needs painting because it is usually a budget breaker to get fixed and done right, that is also why some shops will refuse to even give you an estimate and just say up front, we don't do vettes.

|bigshow2||Hmmmmmm,sounds like it needs to go to a professional.I think I need a lil more practice before I tackle my Vette.This atleast gives me a good idea of what i need to learn. By time I buy all the tools and do the work I could have paid someone. Thank you all for your help.|

Barry beat me to it, but yea, it's been painted and needs to be stripped. That being said, I DA the paint off. Start with 80 grit and sand all the top coats off till you are down to the original base coat. Then switch over to 120 grit and remove all the original base. Try to not go thru the black looking "primer" as that is the urethane coating that is put on the SMC panels when they are made. Sanding the paint off can be scary as you can ruin a panel in a heart beat. The main thing is to go slow and deliberate and watch carefully what you are doing. No "special" paint required.
I personally first seal with 2 good coats of epoxy (SPI being the best I've been able to find). The next day shoot 3 coats of a good 2K primer and let that sit a few days and start blocking with 180 grit to smooth any ripples. A guide coat sprayed on the 2K prior to blocking will help find any low or bad spots. If you have plenty of primer left on the car after the 180 blocking, re guide coat and sand the 180 scratches out with 320 grit. Seal with epoxy, shoot base and clear. This is a slightly condensed version, so if you have any questions, just ask.
If your fiberglass has any cracks, they need to be repaired with fiberglass MAT( not cloth) and SMC resin. Check to make sure that any materials you use for repair are for SMC, or the repair will fail down the road.

take it apart
you need to take the bumpers off to really do a good job. Barry is right strip it. here is a link to the paint process on my 93. yours is put together the same way.

Looking at the pictures, the car will have to be stripped.
A long standing rule on a Vette is factory paint, one repaint and then must be stripped.
The car has been repainted a few times and that is why the big problem on corner of hood and center, way to much material on the glass to handle the expansion and contraction.
Maybe "DT196" will see this and advise as he is an expert on vettes and that is all his shop does, "Shine" is also a vette expert and they could advise better.

If you could shoot us some pictures of the areas that you are talking about, we could give you better advice.
Some people think that painting fiberglass is a different kind of animal. But it's no different that paint any other type of car.
Were the difference is, is the prepping the glass where you have cracks.
After we see some pics we can better advise you.

84 Corvette,just how do you paint it?
I've spoken to a few people on this and some say you need special paint and prepping. Others say "ever painted a boat? Did'nt need special paint did ya?".So if anyone would know I figured it would be here.There is chips in the paint some minor fiberglass damage that I can repair and a large spot on the hood where it looks like 24 years being that close to the cross-fire injection has weakened the paint. Do I strip completely,paint over whats there,use special paint or what? All help is appreciated.Oh by the way the car is a dark red color.
