In 1972 I was driving a 1970 Nova and in the USAF stationed in Abilene Texas. My fiancÚ now wife was living in Nederland Texas and I was driving back and forth every two weeks. My friend talked me into going to the grudge races at the local quarter mile track. This was Wednesday night and I was getting married the following Saturday. I made a couple of low 13 second runs then the engine started banging at the top of each gear. I figured it was either a bad plug or bad gas and was shocked to experience a dropped valve as I power shifted into 4th gear. Towed the Nova back to my friend’s house and after pulling the valve covers to determine which head was involved pulled that head. We discovered a rod and wrist pin in a cylinder-less hole. We were stepping and fetching trying to find a replacement engine before Saturday. Another friend heard of a DZ 302 that was pulled from a 69 Z/28 that was now running a big block. The DZ was in need of a freshen up but could be had for the measly sum of $150. We got it and did a valve job and a lower end freshen up and spent the next few days putting it into the Nova. I made the test drive Saturday morning two hours before I was to get married. The next day my wife and I headed back to Abilene Texas on the way a rocker arm broke but I had my old heads in the trunk and made quick work of the delay. The 302 never did run as good as my original 307 as it probably needed a bore job. I drove the Nova with the DZ 302 for almost a year while I built a 350 which I eventually dropped in. The Nova was sold six years later with that 350 in it. The DZ 302 was left in the garage of an Air Force friend when I was discharged.

|poncho62||In 1973, I was given a DZ engine. Friend had a 69 z28 and blew it up. Couple of broken pistons, crank scored etc....I think the block was good, I never checked. I traded it for a L78 396 that needed rebuilding. We were all into big blocks then....Seemed like a good idea at the time.|

My '69 302 had great throttle response right off idle and up.
What it didn't have was low rpm torque.
The 13# Zoom aluminum flywheel didn't help either with the low rpm torque.

|lg1969||Think about it, a 69 302 was the same as the 70 350. The only difference between the two was the .48" stroke. All 302 did not have low end throttle response. The motor was too radical for the street. That is why a 70 350 LT-1 / Z-28 was built.|

Dam amazing how memory fails and how a fact becomes incorrect and is then believed by the mind as fact.
Thanks for helping me clean out some of them old cobwebs.
Now if I just had my 69 Z/28 again to go with my refreshed memory.

|Old Fool||Maybe already stated, didnt read all 7 pages. Chevy offered the 302 as an optional engine in the 70 Z/28, the 350 LT1 being the standard offering.|

The 302 in my '55
This is (was) a 1969 crate 302 purchased from a dealer in KC back in 1970. Of course it been modified (just a little) but it puts my '55 down the 1/4 in 10.30 @ 134 mph.

|1bad55||Go to ebay and search 302 chevy engine and a company will come up from I think Tennessee that builds a 302 Chevy to factory specs.|
