123pugsy Thanks. I found an instruction sheet in the rebuild kit that spec'd less than the clearance I have, so it should be fine.

Stroke It's been a few years, but is there a wave plate in the pack you say stacks too high? What did your stack measure? Same number of frictions and steels???

I have always tightened up the clearances a little on any of the trans' I've done (20ish) under the assumptions that 1) the shift would occur quicker 2) they will become larger with use. I'll ask my trans buddy what he says for these.

This is for a friend of a friend's mini van. Its just a stock application.

I also checked the low reverse pack and found I have about .065" clearance.

Facts and specs are important. I simply use a visual inspection as I build since I have done this tranny thing for decades.

.054 will work on a 3-4 clutch pack 700r4 IF you have a daily driver , low RPM application. If you are going to shift at higher RPM (above 4500) the clearance needs to be opened to .070 IMHO.

The 3-4 clutch pack can tend to apply centrifugally at higher RPMs. I often install stiffer springs in the aluminum drum to help hold off clutch packs at higher RPMs.

On my 3-4 clutch pack, I have .054" clearance. The "guide" calls for .060"-.083". Is the .054" sufficient?
Would a visual apply here as well?

What would happen if its too tight or too loose?

I am not sure I follow you.... the old frictions / steel plates were OK, for clutch pack clearance?

New frictions and steel plates are too thick / high?

There are two frictions that will fit.... t-350 / powerglide and the 700/4L60 design.

700 frictions are about .090 thick.

t-350 frictions are about .100 thick

not sure if that helps or not.

I stack up reverse frictions and steels in the case on the piston.. set the center support in , check clutch pack clearance visually. I've done it that way for many years.

I'm putting together a 94 4l60e and my "guide" mentions that the low/reverse stackup should measure 1.230". Even if I use the thickest selective plate, I won't get that close. It appears if I did follow spec that the retaining ring might not go in as the stack would be too high.Everything that came out seems to be in good shape with zero wear.
Thoughts?
