Double_v23 I never adjust them with the motor running and often times I set our race motors up with a dial indicator. These have special hydraulic lifters and need to be set at .002-.004 preload.

Jmark I used to adjust them with the engine running. Not any more. It's just too messy for me. Plus, if you have full roller rockers, you won't be able to put a stock cover over them, unless you cut off the whole top. I have a stock SBC cover with the top cut out and it still hits. If I cut any more, i'll have oil spraying everywhere. I've had zero problems adjusting them the "new way"! LOL

Why NOT adjust with the engine running??

You are relying on marks, mirrors and smoke the way you are doing it IMHO ...

Cut yourself a valve cover and do it right ...

65Guera got home after work and readjusted lifters..
set to TDC and adjusted and followed the procedure below

I did a 3/4 turn and locked them down.
When the procedure was complete it helped a little But I think they are still
very noisy more than I would like..
Are there after market roller lifters made that are quite.?
The ones I have are GM OEM roller lifters....

Jmark also, when you have the covers off tonight, look them over inside real good. Big roller rockers can rub if the VC is off just a tad. If you see any shiny marks on the inside of the covers, you may have found the noise.

Deuce Mine were somewhat noisy in my SBC too ... ( GM " Hot cam " )
Factory GM hydraulic rollers with factory 1.6 roller rockers ... I have a cut out valve cover that I install. After the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature ... I install the cut valve cover and then adjust the valve with the engine running. Back one off until it clicks noticeably and then tighten until the noise decreases. Then 1/2 a turn more ... lock down the adjuster and go to the next one After doing all 16 ... mine is noticeably quieter ...

Worked for me

65Guera more time...I will do that tonight...I just hope that its just valve train noise and not a bearing going out...

C-10 A quote from the Professional Products damper instructions:

We have made a running change in our 6-3/4" SB Chevy 350 dampers #80000 and #90000 by adding another TDC mark which is labeled "Vertical TDC." This is for those engines produced from 1984 to 1995 which have the TDC mark at
the top of the balancer and are timed by looking down behind the water pump
to view the timing pointer. Use an aftermarket timing tape if desired."

Use the '0' zero on your balancer.

Here is what I do for adjusting lash and preload, This method works best with degreed balancers with marks every 90 deg.

Start with zero, #1 on TDC. Adjust #1 Intake and Exhaust, rotate engine clockwise with turning socket by hand 90 deg. and adjust #8 Intake and Exhaust...then another 90 deg. and so on.. 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. and you are done. Basically you are following all the TDC events in the firing order. Two full turns of the engine is all you need.

That's the method to my madness anyway.

65Guera I readjusted them all 2 times yesterday....set to TDC spun the pushrod till it gave resistance then I went 3/4 turn and locked them down....Also my
harmonic balancer has a mark called VERTICAL TDC and then the timing marks starting with 0........10........20.........30 etc
I set at the the TDC at this Vertical TDC, was that the right thing to do or should I have set it at o...?

C-10 Yes great vid. Great sounding small block. Personally, the light valve train noise wouldn't bother me. Although I am used to mechanical rollers... .

I bet your valve covers are exaggerating the noise some. Sounds crazy but try a different pair before you resort to drastic measures.

Other than that, double check your lifter preload. The Comp hyd. roller lifters I have spec .030" of plunger preload, which happens to be a half-turn at the rocker with a 7/16 stud. I don't know what GM specs on theirs as far as preload.

Jmark First off, that's a very good video! Most we see are crappy and have horrible sound.

Hmmm, kinda a tough call but to me, it sounds really noisey. We have a Comp roller with their 286 cam and it's pretty quiet compared to yours. Since you have a very loud exhaust and it still comes across as valve noise, i'd be suspect on it. Hopefully some of the others will give their opinion.

What rockers do you have on the heads?
