The one I have is giving me a good service for what I need..Set it to pump to 100 psi max and it will work better and 100 psi is all most of us need anyway I think..

It was a vee configuration it looked like it might be cast iron. I checked the HF web site and they say it is aluminum construction with cast iron sleeves.
Listed out at $119, the store sale was $99 saving $20. I don't know if it's a good pump or not. The stuff I'm used to is much much bigger than what everyone is talking about. Tom F.

Did you by any chance notice if that thing is Aluminum or cast iron? I have recommended that pump a couple of times based on two that I personally know of that are performing very well and holding up just fine. These are however cast iron pumps and I think the one I looked at recently was Aluminum and built somewhat differently so they may have changed. If that is true the cast iron pump may be gone now but the Aluminum version may be as good as the cast iron version, I guess only time will tell.

|jaguarxk120||Get the thing! Flush out the crankcase fill with a good 10-40w oil and try running it. Sounds like your not going to run it 24/7 but only when needed. If you need a new pump get one, I think your money ahead with this compressor. By the way I was at HF today and the store has a sale going on for a vee-twin pump for $99. Good luck Tom F|

|oldred||Matt is right that thing may not be hurt as bad as it might seem. It almost certainly is just an Aluminum rod fitted to the crank and has no bearings, just the aluminum against the cast iron crank. For sure the best thing to do would be to just run it and listen for a knocking sound because until it starts to knock, if it ever does, then there would be no real need to change the pump. Just run it a couple of hours and then change the oil, if it runs that long without a problem there is a good chance it will last a long time.|

that's around 4hp or so.
it might run fine for a long time w/o a new pump... I know a mower engine is similar in design and my dad's mower engine has seized up 3 times from not having oil in it.. ( it uses more oil than gas, and doesn't leak a drop.. but the mower was free soo ).. and it still runs fine after it cools down.. all the bearings and everything are simmilar in design between compressor pumps and small engines.

Well he told me today he would take my offer of $200!
It seems to be working fine too.
The GE motor is only 16 or 17 amp I think and its shaft is not bigger than 5/8s. I bet it is still a pretty good motor. I think I got a deal after all.

|oldred||GE motor? On a Porter Cable? Check the AMP rating on that thing it may be a good buy at $300, Look at the size of the pulley shaft and see if it is bigger than 5/8". A good GE motor and a 60 gal tank would be well worth tracking down a pump for especially if it includes a pressure switch, pop-off valve, etc.|

Just an update on the compressor situation. The brand new Cambell Hastfeild 80 gal, $900 compressor my boss bought broke down after about two hours of use.
We were desperate so we tried putting oil in the porter cable and it runs fine now!
Now he says he will sell it to me for $300! I said I would not pay more than $200 for it. The pumps are not rebuildable and its probably going to die.
He says the GE motor on it is worth $200 alone..
You can't buy stuff from pack rats. Not within reason.

|oldred||No doubt there is a place for these cheaper outfits and it would make little sense to spend the money on an industrial compressor for home/weekend use. My point was that if someone is going through one of these things every 2 or 3 years then they would be better off with one of the better ones that could very well last 20 years or more, just depends on what on what it is being used for. If you were planing on running a shop for a living or just wanted to buy a compressor that you would not have to worry about for many years then the better ones are the way to go. There is nothing at all wrong with what you are wanting to do here and if you can find a good pump cheap enough you could very well end up with a compressor that will last a long time for only a couple hundred dollars or so, not bad at all!|

I am sure that you get what you pay for with compressors but I think if you take care of even a cheap one you can get it to live. We ran this one hard for 5 years and I don't know how long before that. I think with some oil it would have kept trucking.
Right now I own a Husky 23gal oil less and it has served me well but its time to upgrade!

Exactly why something like a Quincy, an Ingersoll, etc are worth the extra money if you plan to use it for more than a couple of years or so. Don't lump all compressors together there is a difference, a big difference, The CHEAP compressors are of the throw-away variety but a Quincy, etc will last for many years and provide good service while you have it, these things are a classic case of the old saying "you get what you pay for".

|old fords||I'd say about $50. The first compressor we had was a $369 lowes special. The pump wore out. It got real hard to turn and it burned up the motor. We then bought a nice compressor that was 6.5hp 80 gallon and about 20cfm. It worked fine for about 5 years and it burned up the motor. We put another motor on it $190, and it lasted about a year. Then I had some money and bought a powertrain compressor 6hp 60 gallon and it has worked good for about a year. I think most compressors are throw away now. If the compressor is bad the motor could be wore out. I think if a new one is around $400 it would be better to get a new one with a warranty.|

|jaguarxk120||If he were to go to a two stage pump it would have to be rated to the motor on the exstising compressor. May have to giveup smoe scfm in trade for a quiter running unit. TF|
