after reading the wd40 post I guess I wont use brake parts cleaner anymore...

This is true for any petroleum solvent, do you really want to absorb petroleum distillates into your bloodstream? I know paint thinners, the urethanes, lacquer and enamel thinners can be absorbed in fairly large amounts and it does not take much of that stuff to make you sick, I would imagine that brake cleaners would be at least as bad or even worse. Something like WD40 may take a larger amount to show immediate effects and a person is not likely to get sick from cleaning his hands with it a few times but over a period of time who knows what could happen. I for one would not intentionally put something on my skin that is going to be rapidly absorbed with unknown consequences, for sure absorbing petroleum distillates into your blood stream is not going to be entirely harmless even if you don't get sick immediately. Think about it- once that stuff is in your system it will have to be removed through the kidneys and liver and if you let it absorb through your skin, even on your hands, that is exactly where it goes. :pain:

When I was sheetmetalling we could go to the stores and get a green jelly to rub into our hands.
It stopped grease and muck penetrating the skin making washing up after
work a breeze.
No need for hand cleaners just regular soap.

I use this (Glove Cote)

www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=FIB+555

I forget who but someone on this site put me onto it a couple of years ago.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post about a 2:00AM trip to the e-room after cleaning a transmission with K-1, thinner and diesel fuel. Yes, it does absorb. Yes, you WILL eventually get sick. No, I wont use any of that stuff again for cleaning parts nor even handle without nitrile gloves or for sure use for a hand cleaner. Fast Orange and/or soap of some sort.

hand cleaner.....

I work in the offshore industry and you talk about a job that will get you greasy. On the drilling rigs they antiseize/pipe dope by the 5 gallon bucket. (one drop of any never/anti-seize and you are smearing it everywhere, right?) What these guys use is called barrier cream and is made by
GOJO. You put it on before you go to work and oil and grease can not penetrate the skin., so no more stains. Then plain old DAWN dishwashing soap(it takes grease out of your way) and it does. It pulls the grease off your hands without pulling the oils out of your hands. Give it a try most parts can order you a tube for like 5 bucks and goes a very long way.

This is about the same stuff as the Evercoat "Glove Cote" although it does look somewhat different. It is everything you said and then some!

I use Dawn dishwater detergent full strength. It's a degreaser formulated for dishes but when used full strength works great on your hands. Just drizzle it on one palm rub it in ,then add a little water to make a little suds and rinse.Even works good on paint residue. If I get paint on my hands I'll wash it off with paint thinner which will leave a little paint film and your hands dry.Wash them with Dawn and they will be smooth and clean.
Yep, that's what I use. And if my hands are really dirty I'll add some Boraxo.

Re Hand Cleaner

:welcome: I take good old DAWN & rub it into my hands & let it dry then
it seals all of your pores & when i get done i use DAWN again. There is a
product out there called INVISIBLE GLOVE & it works too.I was working on
a semi tractor at a food warehouse & my hands were full of grease i was going inside to wash up when this guy tipped over a pallet full of shampoo.
All of us went over there & picked up all of the broken bottles.I washed my hands with shampoo & boy did that ever clean them.

I agree that stuff is way to harsh and could cause some serious skin problems. I once talked to a guy who used lacquer thinner to clean his paint guns but at the same time he got it on his hands leading to severe cracking around the joints. I noticed he had some really bad looking skin cracks that, believe it or not, he had sewn up with a needle and thread :pain: to prevent them from getting worse! When I asked him what had happened to him he explained about the thinner but did not say why he continued to use it, I never bothered to ask him any more.

You list Fast Orange, Goop and GoJo together but Fast Orange is different than the other two. While Goop and GoJo are well known for causing the problems you described (I know first hand about that!) the Fast Orange contains Lanolin that will condition the skin and no harsh solvents, I have been told but do not know for a fact, that GoJo contains kerosene. Have you tried the smooth formula Fast Orange? The pumice formula will cause some problems and is the reason I switched to the smooth type which actually helped my hands heal, this stuff is almost as good as a hand lotion.
Oldred, where are you getting the smooth formula from, ordering it online or in a store? I use the fast orange but all the parts stores around here have the pumice formula.
Thanks,
Steve

Getting the smooth formula is sometimes hard to do and for a long time I had to order it however recently I found it at small local discount store. Wal-Mart had it for a long time but now I think the pumice is all they carry too. NAPA has it in their store brand (I forget exactly what they call it) it is the same Fast Orange in the same containers but with NAPA's label.

I just got the smooth Fast Orange made by Permatex #23113. It's a 15 oz. bottle that was $4.35 my cost. I bought it at the local Parts Plus store, and thought I might try it to see how it works.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what I think of how it works.

I've always been a "pumice" man. :D

Aloe baby wipes work so well I gave up all my gooey hand cleaners, I however keep some almond shell abrasive/clay based hand cleaner made by a manufacturer that is no longer in business for the really nasty stuff.

I am allergic to almost any petroleum based cleaner and even the citrus based stuff gives me grief with dematitus so I am real careful with what I use to clean my hands.

It does work good, but it requires the use of a brush. (which came on the bottle) Some times I have had to wash & brush two times to get the grime off. This bottle is almost empty, and does not appear to be as "cost effective" as NAPA brand # 1505, for me. It does have pumice, and all of the fine qualities of this Fast Orange product, with no smell afterward.

I purchase 1 jug of the NAPA hand cleaner, @ $13.00 twice a year. Compare that to $4.35 in almost per month.

Back to "Pumice Man" for me.

I have several mechanic customers that won't use Permatex Fast Orange (smooth or pumice) for the very reason that so many have already stated ... it dries and cracks your hands.

I very recently came across 5-Star Xtreme Hand Cleaner at a bodyshop account, used a little myself ... and asked how the guys liked it, and they did.

Keep in mind that body guys probably have the driest hands on earth as things like paint dust and laquer thinner will pull the moisture right out of your hands very quickly!

I still have a 1/2 bottle of Fast Orange left, and it is probably fine for a guy like me that doesn't use it several times per day. When it's gone, I just might try the 5-sar stuff.

I think that almost everyone here knows, but in the original question he asked about latex gloves.
Latex is not an effective barrier to petroleum solvents as it breaks down quickly. Also, many people in the healthcare industry have developed latex allergies from use of latex gloves.
So the bottom line is buy only nitrile gloves for the shop.

Hand Cleaner

Look up your closest Zep distributer and ask for cherry bomb. Smells good, doesnt dry you out and it works. Or look up the Dura-Block company and look for their soap... Dura-Scrub. I do body work and it does a really good job of getting rid of two-part adhesives, and dried filler.

i've used Goop, GoJo, Fast Orange, Snap-On, & a number of others i can't remember.
they either didn't clean very good or would dry my hands out. then there is the smell. Goop & GoJo being the worst. they clean ok, but dry my hands out so bad that in cold
dry weather after just a week i can make a fist & my hands start bleeding. a month of using them in the summer does the same. using hand lotion after each time i use them helps, but not enough to stop the cracking.
for the last 15 years or so, i've used almost nothing but Zep Reach hand cleaner. for me it works better than the others & isn't near as hard on my skin as most of the others. it even removes tar. in cold dry weather it does start to dry my hands out after a few weeks but i can keep it in check with some hand lotion every night.
about 6 months ago i heard about Cherry Bomb & talked the boss into buying some. it cleans almost as good as Reach does & it makes my hands softer, plus it smells great.
